Thought I recognised the ref in the Sunderland v West Brom game on TV - a quick search on Google (!) shows that Mr A Leake ref'd a certain game at the Meadow last season... (see link) news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/2693969.stmBrings back good memories! Can we have him for the play-off final - may be a lucky mascot!

You're probably right. I don't recall the standard of refereeing in the 3rd division being that much better than in the Conference (if at all!)
I think the only decent ref. we've had recently was when Neale Barry did a game... and I remember Roger Milford (he of the mullet) doing a game many years ago... Shame we can't have Premiership officials more often!

Roger Milford did a New Years Day fixture in 93/94 against Colchester when Gary Patterson had a handbags at 10 paces with a Colchester player, Milford took them to one side and said "You know as well as I know we all want to get home to have a festive drink, can we please pack this in, shake hands and get on with the game" Superb Ref

I think Urriah Rennie reffed his first league game at AGy Meadow. have to say he had a brilliant game. Its the only time I've seen all 22 player accept the refs decision reguardless of whether it went against them or not.

I was mascot for Rennie's first game at the meadow a few years ago.
Thought he was/ is a decent ref. He sent off Benny Gall in the FA Cup first round game with Grimsby for nearly decapitating their forward through on goal. I wasn't at the replay when he sent off Lee Taylor and Craig Herbert though in a 4-0 loss.

When Roger Milford did that Colchester game 10 years ago. As my Dad and me were walking behind the wakeman goal towards the end of the game town had a corner it think , and he was standing by the goalpost. he looked at the crowd, my dad said something along the lines of " Good game this", to which Milford replied "it is, i've really enjoyed this today".
Also mentioned is Tony Leake. At a game last season as i was making way round the corner by the toilets onto the riverside, the officials were in that corner doing their warm-up. I was there for a good 5 minutes having a good conversation with him. In my opinion he's one of the better and more comsistant refs in the league.
We need more people like Mr Leake and Mr Milford in charge of the game who can have a laugh and joke with the crowd. Most of the officials take themselves to seriously!!
