What does Shrewsbury need to make it a better place to live that can be justified splashing some money on it?

Transport Infrastructure!
Make the town centre like Chester, total pedestrianised. Improved parking facilities on the edge of the town centre and tram ways through the town centre...

A decent live music venue and a club that plays rock, metal, indie, hip hop etc and not cheesey dance.
I believe a reference library could soon be sadly lacking, too.

improved transport to cut down on traffic problems definitely - two new railways halts for a start: one near harlescott level crossing; t'other by the meadow/sainsburys.
decent live venue and local music scene. personally i think the music hall would've been great to turn into a proper standalone live venue once the theatre had moved out.
oh and championship football!

Immigrants.
I'm serious. I was shocked to read over New Year that the Town were playing in the change kit at Burton because no laundrettes would be open. Then there were Heavenly's comments on not being able to buy from independent shops around the clock. If you had a big influx of immigrants this would sort both of those out, and give nice cheap legal labour to the employers of the region.
Not to mention, you get some cracking chocolate in Romanian shops.

1. A North West relief road to stop the Smithfield Road and Castle foregate pollution nightmare which for me are the grubbiest areas of Town 2. A park where the Shirehall is. Knock the current monstrosity down, put the fountains back and make the most of having a column which I haven't see in any other Town. 3. My daughter suggested a theme park on the West Mid Showground ! 4. A railway stop on the Telford to Shrewsbury line close to Abbey foregate. Why have people got to walk all the way through Town to get to Coleham when the train passes it on the way in ? 5. Roof top open air swimming pool/Spa, like they've got in Bath. Somewhere at the top of Pride Hill, perhaps where the old Burger King used to be 6. A roadbridge and link road from The Dana, past the old Gay Meadow to Abbey foregate 7. Get rid of the prison and stick it on the outskirts of Town or preferably on some moorland somewhere miles away from the Town Centre. In this day and age there should not be a prison in our town centre. 8. Where the prison was make it a huge multi storey car park with tram system along the river to the back of the Old RSI 9. Turn the old Maltings into a University campus. What better place to study than Shrewsbury? Maybe a Science University capitalising on the Darwin connection 10. Turn the back of the RSI into a ski/sledge/snowboard and open air skating rink ! It's a waste of a good slope !

If Meole Golf Course is to close I think it should be turned into a Town Park, with nature trails etc

A University would improve the town immeasurably in my opinion, although I can easily see why others would disagree... A couple more train stations on the outskirts of town - Meole, Harlescott etc. Getting rid of the terrible market hall Making more of the town's history, I know a fair amount is around but I still think more could be done to promote it. Destroying the Riverside shopping centre Renovating the Darwin into something just a bit more interesting, not just a dreary and bland outlet full of dreary and bland shops. All things considered though, it's a pretty good place to live if a bit boring sometimes. Lots of good pubs, interesting shops and restaurants and whenever I visit nearly any other town, I always leave feeling a bit smug By the way, an open air swimming pool? Really?!

To start with more higher paid jobs, even more important in the near future.
A set of councillors with vision for the whole town.
A town centre residents association that realises that the town belongs to everyone not just those who live within the loop.
In my opinion until attitudes change the town will continue to be seen as a sleepy backwater.

By the way, an open air swimming pool? Really?! Yes ! Brilliant attraction at Bath. People pay a small fortune to go in and queue round the block. It would definitely help bring people into the town and be a great treat for us locals too. The view from the top would be amazing. www.thermaebathspa.com/

This could be an interesting night at the Theatre Severn: Sun 27 February MARK STEEL'S IN TOWN Venue: The Auditorium Following his highly acclaimed, Sony Award winning and Writers Guild Award winning Radio 4 comedy show Mark Steel’s In Town, writer and stand-up comedian Mark Steel is back on the road from 26 January 2011. Bringing an element of Mark Steel’s In Town to each live show on this tour, means Mark will write material shedding light on the quirkiness and interesting aspects of every town and city he visits, allowing each show to be unique - something local audiences up and down the country will devour and enjoy. Mark is committed to performing a routine about the history of every town he’ll perform in. However, he may regret making this promise. As well as Mark Steel’s In Town, Mark has presented the BAFTA nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC2, is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News For You and Radio 4’s Newsquiz. He’s written several, acclaimed books, including: Reasons To Be Cheerful and What’s Going On and he writes a weekly column for The Independent. www.theatresevern.co.uk/WhatsOn_focus.asp?ShowId=612&sC=page10Always enjoy his column in the Independent and will be interested to see what material he comes up with for Shrewsbury.

I second both of these suggestions. No diversity at all, imo bar fever is the same as reflex. I remember reading a flyer for Bar Fever and it said something along the lines of "JUST WHAT SHREWSBURY NEEDS". I thought, not really, theres a similar bar just across the road Anyway as for what Shrewsbury needs I depend on what your age/lifestyle is like as that is what will drive what people want. Probably doesnt need it but Id love to see it make more use of the river. The area down so the called Victoria Quay should be pedestrianed iny my opinion and would be great to see bars/cafes/restaurants overlooking the river. In the summertime I can only think of the Boathouse and the Crown Coleham where you can eat/drink outside with a nice view

Honestly agree with TMLS. Bit of diversity would be lovely, living in Manchester, range of people cultures is what makes being in a city so enjoyable. Shrewsbury is about 98/99% white i think.
Otherwise, a better night other than the c**p clubs we have now, and a better public transport infrastructure would be good

The single thing that would liven up the town most, bring new business, especially in the entertainment field and and a population of bright, energetic and diverse people is a university.
Although I love my home town, I have to agree with my 86 year old mother when she complains about what a dull, backward looking place it is!

I think a 90's bar wit 90's music, a rock, indie and hip hop venue. An indoor hall/exhibition/arena centre that can hold several thousand as an arena similar to West point in Exeter. A University would be good. how about turning the West Mid showground into a racecourse, I'd love to see horse racing something similar to Chester and bigger than Ludlow. A Tram/Rail system with stops north to south. A football ground with corners filled in. I don't want to see multiculturalism introduced though, Shrewsbury is a cracking old English town that don't need any mosques spoiling the skyline.

A pier. There's a burnt down old hulk here in Brighton that we do not need - you're welcome. As bobbyc has stated above - a Championship club too!

A mini version of the Northern Quarter in Manchester would be great. Independent shops and restaurants from a range of cultures but still very much in the Manchester character and reflective of the areas history.
Sadly the theatre was a missed opportunity to have a good quality venue that catered for all ages and tastes. Getting young people more involved in the decision making of the town would be great, and give it a bit of a shot in the arm

A University, an influx of young people to feed a night time economy, a cultural boost and just some life into a town that was designed around trade and activity 800 years ago. Sometime in the suburban age, Shrewsbury fell asleep, and let in the "we dont do that here " brigade. The Quarry, a resource funded by you the tax payer, but hogged by a self appointed few who decide what is allowed on this public space. Its ok for fireworks (noise pollution and the Welsh National Anthem) at the Flower Show, but my god, you can hear the decibels in Atcham if Jools H gets going, humbug.
The Town Squre, once a point for trade and entertainment back in the day, now just an empty space most of the time, except for a few tramps back in the 90's. A town like this should be full of small traders, outside seating, bars, restaraunts, and live music.
The Town Centre Residents Assc, why do these unelected lobbyists get so much clout in the decision making process?, its almost sinister.
Anyway, our loss is Chesters gain.
