This could be an interesting night at the Theatre Severn: Sun 27 February MARK STEEL'S IN TOWN Venue: The Auditorium Following his highly acclaimed, Sony Award winning and Writers Guild Award winning Radio 4 comedy show Mark Steel’s In Town, writer and stand-up comedian Mark Steel is back on the road from 26 January 2011. Bringing an element of Mark Steel’s In Town to each live show on this tour, means Mark will write material shedding light on the quirkiness and interesting aspects of every town and city he visits, allowing each show to be unique - something local audiences up and down the country will devour and enjoy. Mark is committed to performing a routine about the history of every town he’ll perform in. However, he may regret making this promise. As well as Mark Steel’s In Town, Mark has presented the BAFTA nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC2, is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News For You and Radio 4’s Newsquiz. He’s written several, acclaimed books, including: Reasons To Be Cheerful and What’s Going On and he writes a weekly column for The Independent. www.theatresevern.co.uk/WhatsOn_focus.asp?ShowId=612&sC=page10Always enjoy his column in the Independent and will be interested to see what material he comes up with for Shrewsbury. Will be there, his observations are brilliant. Looking forward to what he thinks of our town.

Shrewsbury is a cracking old English town that don't need any mosques spoiling the skyline. A lot of mosques in towns of a similar size to Shrewsbury are in derelicts schools or other buildings - if I look out if my bedroom window two streets away is a mosque but you couldn't tell even this close. Perhaps it could be a future use for the Wakeman? If not, the thing the town could do with the most is a "Little England" sign...

It would be great to have a mosque in Ditherington, just think with all the shoes left outside the door the locals would all be wearing them with in 2 mins

Honestly agree with TMLS. Bit of diversity would be lovely, living in Manchester, range of people cultures is what makes being in a city so enjoyable. Shrewsbury is about 98/99% white i think. And, the problem with that is? Ive heard quite a few people say that Shrewsbury is too white, imagine the uproar if someone suggested a town was too asian/black, of course its fine to suggest something is too white though. Id imagine it must only be in England where people complain because there isnt enough diversity in their towns. Unless there are villages in Africa campaigning for more whiteys and towns in Pakistan demanding more Anglo Saxons to enrich their lives. I know people will say that its a sign of little Englander, backwards town mentality etc but Im not sure why my life would be better if I had a asian neighbour or live in a predominantly black neighbourhood? Im not saying it will be worse but I just hate that attituide that Shrewsbury is backwards because its a mainly white town. I know people who live in some of these so called diverse areas and from the stories I hear, I would hate to live there because of the underlying tensions, however I have no doubt that there will be other areas which are nice places to live in and people get alone. Its like all other towns/cities which are less diverse, some good areas, some not so nice, however some people seem to think that diversity always equals a enriched life

And, the problem with that is? To be fair to Rusholme Ruffian he didn't actually say it was a problem did he ? I agree though that Shrewsbury is alright as it is. It's a Town without too many problems (other than the odd murder or three) and more diversity might be a good thing but it can also come with its problems as well. Therefore if we go back to the thread title and what do we need to improve the town I would say that more diversity is something that is a 'maybe' rather than something that is definitely needed.
