In over 30 years of attending live music shows I went to the Royal Albert Hall for the first time Friday night and I thought it was a great place. Loads of people told me it is a s**t place due to poor acoustics but I could not disagree more. Other venues I have visited and really enjoyed, include the Bottom Line in New York. Stone Pony, Asbury Park, New Jersey. Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey. House of Blues, Orlando and Bingley Hall, Stafford(saw some great acts there in the 70s and early 80s before the NEC was built). One place I would like to go is Red Rocks, Colorado it looks awesome, anyone ever been

London Astoria for me.
Despite the overpriced beer and the smelly underground its a brilliant venue, with plenty of ammenities nearby (pub, cash machine and costa coffee (for Amy) etc...)
Also has these brilliant little booths/tables that you can sit at and still be close to action above the standing area.
Great venue and great sound.
Also quite enjoy the civic, they do a nice roast, beers cheap and theres nice cosy standing room.

Agree with rob the astoria is the best, always a good atmosphere and you don't have to be crushed against the railings at the front to enjoy it. Not that impressed with the carling academy in birmingham. Wolvo Civic and Wulfrun hall are both ok, much prefer small venues to big 'uns like manchester NIA and Nottingham ice arena.

the cellars in the butter market are pretty damn good when there is more than one person working on the bar

After Thursday night I agree with Rob and Amy, top night there watching The Music and the little seating area was quality, even if I do prefer standing generally.
And as a Birmingham Academy 'employee' I should sick up for it really, terrible facilities and an awful backstage/dressing room area but it's got the grungy, dirty feel I like at a gig. The Libertines in Feburary 2004 was a prime example of good old sleazy rock 'n' roll and wouldn't have felt the same at somewhere like the Wolves Civic or the Wulfrun, far too classy for my liking, more like a town hall than a gig venue.
Should mention the Buttermarket too, very different but perfect for up and coming bands (highlighted by the likes of Kasabian and The Cribs playing there)
Hate places like Earls Court, NEC Arena etc where you need binoculars to get a look at the band...

Bingley Hall - brings back memories of Pink Floyd on the Animals tour and Bob Marley - it was a great venue.
Saw Elvis Costello on the banks of the Cuyahoga River with downtown Cleveland as a backdrop - brilliant.
