One of the arguments used against the purchase of the Gay Meadow by the council as a site for a new theatre was that council tax payers should not subsidise a private company and their supporters' entertainment.
According to this week's Chronicle though it's ok for council tax payers to subsidise entertainment run by the council themselves. Total cost of running what are described as theatre services is put at £1,335,000 with income estimated at £687,000 so council tax payers will have to cough up the shortfall. Oh, and this is before they splash out £15 million on a new theatre........

Ah, but you forget, the "people" want a theatre, they don't want a football club. Isn't that right everybody?

Oh,forgot to mention, in the report in the Chronicle, Councillor Armstrong (Portfolio holder for culture, recreation and capital projects no less) is quoted as saying that the Music Hall would remain the town's main arts and entertainment venue for at least the next three years. Hmmm, ever heard of the Buttermarket and the Gay Meadow, old son?
