... quite why our "Golden Boy" Luke Rodgers has not set the Conference on fire as all seemed to suggest pre-season. With all the ballhoo about him being worth anywhere between 100K and 1 million we all expected a wonderful season, full of goals and match-winning performances.
OK so one man doesn't make a team and the whole team have not played well but other sides have strikers scoring regularly and are in our position or worse. D'Sane (Aldershot), Devine (Exeter) and Grazioli (Barnet) who all have 25 goals to their name this season. There are many others who have scored more than Luke. Duane Darby has looked to be the more complete striker in recent weeks and is scoring goals.
Well done Luke for your goal yesterday. What do we think he will be worth now at the end of this season of torment?

Not sure what he'll be worth. I suppose its what other clubs are prepared to pay.
I think that it wouldn't be worth selling him for what these other clubs will stump up, because he'll be worth more than that at Shrewsbury.
Although not scoring as freely as other strikers in the conference, this is due to a few factors, viz
Not played as regularly as these other playes, maybe his goals to games ratio may be near to those (except clare at Chester who has scored 28 in 28 games)
Also, defenders are very aware of Lukes talents, and therefore tend to mark him a little more closely than would normally be the case. This does, of course, leave a little more freedom for Cramb, Darby et al which has been shown in their goals tally when compared with Luke's.

But surely they are as aware of Grazioli and co yet they still managed to score goals this season!

I would say he will not be signing a new contract so with a year left it depends on what we get offered.I can't really see anyone coming in with anything over 100,000 though because if you were a chairman of a club would you spend big money on a non goalscoring non-league striker?

My point entirely. nobodys going to spend that much on him, so no benefit in selling.

Shame he can't move though because he hasn't been fully focused at times this season with all the transfer talk and it would be unfair to hold him back because he is/was as good as Ellington and Earnshaw and look at them now.Luke has gone backwards and needs a fresh start elsewhere to kickstart his career again.

Teams will still want him but his market value is shot to pieces.
Considering the lad broke into the first team aged 18, and has still never gone more than 4/5 league starts without scoring, he'll still be a wanted man.
This debate is pretty irrelevant at this point - what is important is whether he can find the goalscoring form that could shoot us to play-off glory. I think that he might just do it.

but if he's having trouble making a mark in the conference, he's unlikely to make a mark in higher divisions.
I see your point, totally agree with it, and I feel for Luke.
He's stuck in a rut that is difficult to get out of.
It wouldn't be so bad if it was a comfort zone for him, but it isn't.

Let's give Luke another run in the side until the end of the season and let him put himself into the shop window.
Yesterday he produced a superb assist for Darby's second, an excellent finish for his goal (much like the Luke 'of old') and scored a breathtaking volley in the first half that was ruled out for offside.

To add to what ant has said, Rogers hit one hell of a free kick from about 40 yards yeseterday, the Farny keeper pulled off an excellent save to stop it

I think it's been a combination of things this season- the unsettling transfer speculation, followed by an untimely injury which seemed to effect his pace, followed by having a glut of strikers in the squad all eager for a place in the side. I too think he should have a run in the side now until the end of the season. If we make the play-offs I hope all our "big" players are available and in the team and Luke is one of them.

I have the reason! In Div 3 the defenders arent so close and this enables Luke to run at them, in the Cof they are in his face

Maybe it has something to with JQ not building the team around the clubs main asset and thus not playing to his strenghs. If what I've herd, the way he's been treated by certain people at the club and the transfer speculation will not have helped.
However I believe it is the way we play that has had the main effect on his performances, after all a striker that has to come back to the halfway line to pick up a ball is bound to struggle when he is expected to score.

The reason for lukeys indifferent season is that he's not had a regular strike partner.Last season it was lukey and jemmo all season and although they didn't see eye to eye they played well together. luke had colin cramb at start of season. They don't get on and it shows on the pitch. Now hopefully Luke and Darby have started to hit it off things might start looking up for him.

Wasnt Lukes marvolous through ball that put Tolley clear as well?
