Although I agree with the idea of a statue and am more than willing to contribute, I disagree with the corporate sponsorship idea, a plaque underneath stating ''the Arthur Rowley Statue, brought to you in conjunction with ********'' would be both demeaning to the man and just plain ugly.
If someone can get a plan together that gives a reasonable amount cash to be raised and a reasonable timescale it would be more rewarding for the fans than a sponsored statue. Time for the supporters groups to come together and see if it is doable. If the club want to get involved financially then fine, but even without their help the idea is still a good one.
Personally I'd love to see the club get the concourses sorted out with pictures of ex-players, great matches from the past at Gay Meadow etc. before committing to a statue. I think it's time for them to acknowledge our history.

A corporate sponsor can be rewarded with publicity within the ground or in other ways. If we cou;ld do it without it then great, but it's an option that would be foolish not to investigate.

This reminds me of where I used to work. There was a form sent out to employees asking what improvements they'd like to see.
When the reply came back, it was always the same, " desirable, but not essential".
I think the statue falls into the same category. I don't know if many of you have had a tour of the ground, but if you have, you'll know that some of the equipment has been paid for by the Superblues, otherwise it wouldn't have been purchased.
Has anyone thought of approaching Chris Smith to see if they'd be interested in helping with this project?

To be honest I'm very busy with fundraising for another cause already but I'd be willing to help out where I could if people want to get this idea off the ground - or at least look in to the feasability of it.

Like the £1 a game idea. We would of course not get a pound off everybody but would I feel make a substancial inroad.
Alternatively the Club for one season could add a pound to every other league game for fund raising purposes, I don't think many would be too upset seeing as it's for such a cause.
Question, when we went to Stoke and Wembley what did the majority go and do ? Have a look at Bobby and Stan of course.
Finally there is the cheaper option, instead of purchasing a sculpture we could use fast Eddy, he stands around all day doing f00k all.

Would a really good bust (no spersoning) do the same job for less cash? It would be nice to go for the full Bobby Moore/Cloughie but do folks think this might be a more affordable compromise? I know nothing about sculptures and statues so may well be talking cr@p. I think this too - a bust or some kind of sculpture of Rowley would be a good compromise. Don't take this as a slur against Rowley, but I would rather the club spend money on improving/maintaining the team, and I think it would be a lot of money for our fanbase to raise. If anyone is aware of the late 1970s F1 driver from Ruthin, Tom Pryce, there was a campaign to get a commemorative scuplture made in his memory, this came off and the finished article is now in Ruthin and looks very impressive, kind of a mural with bronze bust of Pryce sculpted on a background of him driving, complete with a brief inscription commemorating his life and achievements. It looks impressive, and personally I think something like this would be more realistic for fans to aim towards, whilst in itself acting as a fitting memorial.

Maybe the best thing to do would be to get a quote for both a bust and a statue and see how the fundraising goes.

Would it be worth approaching the football league for a donation towards it? Arthur Rowley is a historical figure, not just for Shrewsbury Town, but for football in general. Nobody will ever match his goalscoring record, ever.
His memory has to be celebrated in some way, and the FL should be as interested in this as we are.

It's a great idea and would be an excellent addition to the stadium but as with so much in life it's all nice in principal but it's just a pipe dream until someone steps up to the plates and does as well as thinks.

The only problem with this is that whilst he also went on to manage us for ten years, he actually scored a lot more goals for Liecester. As they would be interested in honouring him as the leading scorer of all time I think they would want to do that in Liecester. Worth looking in to though.

A memorial to Arthur would be great and help to make the stadium more like home.
But if the club were interested in its history wouldn't something have been done already?
Any memorial would have to be erected on land belonging to the club, without their support it will never happen.
As for raising money, I am involved in a couple of heritage schemes where a small sum is paid monthly by direct debit. For example, 500 people donating £5 per month = £30k per year.
