I don't see how a club could stop a player smoking. They can't (& shouldn't) control every aspect of their lives. I think Berbatov's a smoker and Barthez was quite a heavy smoker.
If it's reflected in their athletic abilities or performances then it'll cost them their place in the team. If not, it's their business if they want to risk their health.

They say the first thing a man reaches for after sex is a fag. If Rooney is on 20 a day............?? Maybe he,s looking to Marlboro to join his ever increasing sponsorship portfolio.

Eminem said something along the lines of 'if a pop star is raising your kid, you should question your parenting', and I suppose a similar thing could be said about footballers.
That said, if the tabloid allegations turn out to be true, I have very little sympathy for Rooney.
Anyone caught shagging prostitutes behind his pregnant wife's back is going to be the subject of some opprobrium, whether they work for a shop, factory or Manchester United. In Rooney's case it's just on another level due to his profile. He benefits from a high profile and this is the downside.
Hello magazine paid £1.5M for the photo rights to his wedding, so it's inevitable that there is going to be big interest when a story surfaces that appears to discredit the 'childhood sweethearts' image presented to the public.
Rooney is also promotes Nike, Coke and EA Sports computer games, all brands which will use his image to appeal to children, so no get out of jail there for Rooney, I'm afraid.
It's also not true that footballers are held to a different standard to everyone else. Teachers, policemen, politicians and all manner of public servants could probably expect to lose their jobs if they were exposed using the services of prostitutes.
Rooney may not be a public servant but he's certainly a public figure.
I also wonder whether club allegiances have strongly influenced some of the posts on this thread. Would the United contingent have come running to the defence of Gerrard quite so readily if he was caught in a similar situation?

An excellent response, and also someone else who has the moral fibre to stand up and be counted. After reading some of the juvenile posts on here on the Rooney thread, it makes a change to read a more mature view.

He's certainly a role model in some regard due the way he is marketing himself/being marketed. The FA have him as one of the faces of their franchise to sell the business and England brand globally, though the gene pool they have to work with is shallow it would seem.
Some good points on here - a lot of charridy work by these players goes un-noticed and un reporeted. Thats normally down to the player himself wanting to keep out of the limelight. Who honestly knew about Craig Bellamys work in South Africa? before it was an item during the World Cup? Totally against the image we have of him.
They are just like any of us in the street in the regard that they are not flawless. Its not just the prem where this behaviour occurs. It even happens in the fourth division of football. Any street in any town will have a story to tell, its just we're not public figures selling stories to the glossies when it suits and obtaining injuctions when it suits also.

You make sure you wear a good hat and scarf up there on that cloud, the weathers closing in for winter. Stand up and be counted ? what the hell do you think people are doing when they voice an opinion ? they are making themselves accountable for their comments. Just because someone has the forsight to have a view different to yourself does not mean they are wrong!

I heard that United are having an 80's themed party this Christmas, with players arriving at the venue in the retro car of their choice. Giggs has plumped for a Capri as his transport, Rio is firing up the Quattro for the night and Rooney is going to come in an Escort.

I feel sorry for Rooney, Most top footballers go out and have women throwing themselves at them, hes still so damm ugly, hes got to pay for it... I have also herd that Coleen is going to sue the escort woman for an infringement of copyright... she reckons sleeping with Wayne for money was her idea! JOKES!

If you read back you will find i was agreeing with someones point of view, but as it did not agree with yours it was deemed to be utter nonsense. I think Shrewsace's brilliant reply to your posts may have hit a nerve. Was going to ask to borrow your hat and scarf, as you're obviously wrapped up in your own smugness.
