I would think it fitting if we could play a team to celebrate our 125th anniversary next pre-season. It could be billed as the 125th Anniversary match?
I would like the club to invite a massive team to come a play us, somebody adventurous like Real Madrid, Inter or AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Barcelona etc. If that can't be done then perhaps invite Tottenham as they are the only team to have never played Shrewsbury in the four divisions.
What would be you thoughts on something like this?

I think it would be a little adventurous to expect a big European team to come and play us, and with respect to the club, I think that it means a little more than a meaningless friendly for a Premiership team.
I'd suggest perhaps having a 'past, present, future' idea, split the first team into two and then have members of the youth team bolster out a team. For the 'second' team, invite some of the ex Shrewsbury pros to play, e.g Ogrizovic, Cooke, Walton, Cross etc, I think that would commemorate the history of the club and celebrate some of the players who have shaped the club's history

People moan about paying £20 to see a game
I know people who set up matches and I recon the admission price would be at least £65 and we would need to FILL the stadium
NO CHANCE!

Upton Magna All Stars could be the answer.

Dont see why the club would charge £65. Think there would need to be match of some sort. Having a big international club over might be a bit much. Considering the town's twinning links with Zutphen in Holland thou how about inviting them over for a game?

I think we joined the League along with Scunny and played them on the first day in 1950. How far back does the Town history book go? What were the first game recorded in that? And what league? Does 'Breath on em Salop' have records before the League years or?

I think " down to Salop" is right in this case as the capital, London, is always considered to be up.

Dont see why the club would charge £65. Seem to remember Real Madrid charging £750k to play a friendly to raise money for Puskas and he was a legend for them - imagine what they'd demand to come and play us!!

Dont think belvidereshrew understands that clubs want a fee and who pays for that fee? The fans - hence £65 admission and the 100% must for a full house

Wouldn't've thought a big European Club would be doable. Biggest draw I can think of which could be logistically possible would be the current Prem Champs. Prob being, of course, that we'd have to wait til May to find out who they are.

I think Cork City played Real Madrid a few years ago, i'm pretty certain we are a bigger club than cork city. There is always a club from north of the border Celtic or Rangers maybe, Philadelphia Union would be pretty good they may do a European tour for there pre-season.
The club could also look at possible teams that have been invited to play in such tournaments like the Wembley or the emirates tournament participants. It would be nice to play some top European opposition.

it would be nice, but it will only happen on the play station I think
teams don't just turn up on a tour, they are planned 18 months in advance and the host clubs have to pay them sums of money which would probably guarantee promotion if invested into a team

I wonder if Arsenal would play for a bag of chips again, like they did when it was Brian Hornsby's testimonial.

As Bobby Charlton is an ex-Town player perhaps he could have a word with Sir Alex?

Why don't we play a celeb team, there's a few of them about, and play for a Charity like relief aid for those who are needy, Pakistan Flood victims, Haiti Earthquake Appeal, those in Telford.

There is always a club from north of the border Celtic or Rangers maybe, Philadelphia Union would be pretty good they may do a European tour for there pre-season. Cork City have since gone bust and re-formed, they were always a big club for Irish football, you sure they played Madrid in a friendly? Philadelphia Union wouldnt come over to England in July/early August as the MLS season runs through the summer, I'd love to see Rangers come over, but I think either of the Old Firm teams coming to Salop would be far too much hassle for the police, but would be a dream come true for the landlords! I think the club will go for Tottenham as they are the only club (along with Forest) who we've never played in a competitive game, but any Premier League club would do me, most of them only tend to go away on lucrative tours of Asia/Australia or the US these days so we would be doing well to attract any of them to come down to the Meadow.
