What does "villify" mean though?
Is anyone calling him names?
Or is this more of a retrospective view of his failures.
However "well spoken" or friendly to the media the guy is, fans surely have a right to discuss where it went wrong.

My last conversation with PS was about a young kid who has now signed for bury but wanted to play for shrews, I knew the kid a little via someone else, he kinda payed me lip service and said he would speak to his agent, he never did which made me think a bit less of him but overall why still so much Simpson baiting, why? He's gone, yes he brought us some success and failure resulting in him getting the sack, my experience of him was of a very approachable, well liked man in football. Let's not forget he's still relatively young in his career and will learn from his mistakes, he's by no means a poor manager. I won't be booing him on his return but am definately alot happier he's moved on and we GT.

I hope the fans will be big enough to give him a decent reception when Stockport visit (and up there in a couple of weeks). We should think of directing a gesture of sympathy towards the Stockport fans.

It winds me up just hearing Ratcliffe spouting his crap on T.V
Still public enemy no.1 for me as a Town fan for letting the team slip out of the league like he did. I wish Simmo good luck and would never tar him with the same brush as a fool like Ratcliffe.

Overall it was OK, we weren't good enough to go up but nor were we in the downward spiral we had been when he over. Really? When he over we were 15th having dropped from a much higher position earlier in the season. When he left us we were in 12th having dropped from a much higher position earlier in the season. I'd say the similarities are there for everyone to see. If the back half of the 2007/8 season was a downward spiral then the back half of last season certainly was too.

It's a fine line between success and failure guys. We scraped through to the play-off final and we all know that we choked there. I don't know why that was. I met up with Paul and the players at the stadium the day before the game and all were very relaxed - no sign of nerves. Had we played to our capabilities and won, Simmo would have been hailed a hero. A bit like Mark Stimson if you like who the Gills up at our expense. Only to fail in L1 and get the sack. Fickle? Fans? Never.

Agree, we need to move on now PS has left as we very much appear to have a new team under GT. Just one small postcript though: PETERS OUT!

He then tried to take the credit for Jake Robinson by saying he brought him to the Town and he knew what a good player he was. And couldnt get the best out of him, like with so many other players, which just about summed up his time with us. I just couldnt understand how he could come across as so nice and pleasant in the national media yet came across as a grumpy git prepared to shift the blame on everyone but himself in the local media. He had only himself to blame for his predicament.

I think Simpson is an example of a wider problem in English football of chairman and journalists making an assumption that good ex-players, make good managers.
Simpson was undoubtedly a good player, but from his time at Preston and with us clearly struggles with the job of management - both from the point of view of how to manage players and also how to arrange a team. He went from player to manager almost over night and I think that jump is too much in the modern game. When players come to the end of their playing careers I think they should spend 3-4 seasons learning how to manage and coach, as its totally different to playing.
Experience also plays a big role - its no coincidence that Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool all have older managers, and seeing how Graham Turner has set the side up this season shows the value of having a good manager, rather than someone who can do a good interview on sky.

A nice fella and a very good pundit.
But two years of dreadfully dull football and overall a below par performance as manager.
Villified? No. Reasoned review of Paul Simpson? Yes.

I think we can therefore proclaim his transfer record as absolutely dire. grant holt, sold on for 3 times more than we payed for him in just 12 months I'd imagine that was facilitated by Holts agent having a pretty solid get out clause in the contract when he signed for us. Simmo himself bemoaned Holts positioning and play as being detrimental to the team....(ie he couldt manage him...) add James Constable to thel list of players discarded......didnt he also proclaim Constable wouldnt score at this level?

I'll shut up about him if he'll shut up as well. A bitter man who had two and a half years and failed. My last two trips to Darlo and Grimsby, who were bottom, ended in shocking loses in both seasons, and who will ever forget Blythe? He's got a new club now, why doesn't he just concentrate on that instead of harping back?

Agree with Monkee, we now have a vastly improved manager who is quickly making us forget the frustrations of Simmos tenure. Nice enough chap Simmo but far better on Sky than he will ever be as a Manager and glad hes no longer ours. With his interviews though he really needs to look forward and forget whats gone before, the little dig has me itching to join in any "Simmo, Simmo whats the score" chants we are lucky enough to be able to kick off in two weeks! On the subject of media have to say i really enjoy GTs interviews, talks absolute sense, very honest and straight forward, you can see why players obviously want to play under him ,his experience shines through and we are lucky to have him!

Typical Simpson in that he spoke and came across well. But he hasn't changed. Tried to take credit for Preston's win in that they had a couiple of youngster's playing on Tuesday night that he had apparently brought into the club and nurtured. He then tried to take the credit for Jake Robinson by saying he brought him to the Town and he knew what a good player he was. Thing is Simmo, for whatever reason, Robbo failed under you last season, one of a number of players to do so. He has started like a new player this season. Yes early days and all that, but you do wonder if Jake would have been given a chance under Simmo this season and if so if he would have come out of the blocks in the way he has so far? But at the end of the day is anything he said in that interview regarding the players he brought into Preston and Robbo untrue? Did he bring those players into their respective clubs? Did he mention whether Robbo was a failure or success at Town last season? If so, what did he say? By the by, I'm a bit lost with some of the comments in this thread. Has Simpson come out and said that his time at Town was a success, that his tranfer policy was a success? I'd have thought considering he got the sack without gaining promotion with the club he would look at his time at Town as a failure all things considered...but he has said it was a success or?

Paul Simpson in one sentence. Comes across well on TV, but didn't come across too well in the transfer market or the changing room.

An articulate and engaging media pundit but really happy that he is no longer the manager of the team I spend my money on watching. A very stubborn, obstinate and limited football manager Occasionally you talk sense ..........and this is one of those blue moon occasions !

That was not villifying him , just an accurate description of what he was doing . There was nothing false or wrong in that .

Well I for one hope that he gets a decent reception. He tried his best for us, he didn’t want us to fail, I’m sure he was hurt just as much as we were with that last minute goal at Wembley. So he didn’t get us promoted, it didn’t happen for him in the transfer market. When it comes to Town he is in pretty good company, along with a fair few other managers. He didn’t harm the club, he didn’t take us down, he was just unable to get us promoted (and a damn close call that was too). If I were at Stockport I’d definitely be giving a decent reception…

Stuff like this still sticks in the throat: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/shrewsbury/8592509.stm

I can still remember getting back to my car after leaving burton having done nothing but support the team, switching on the radio and hearing simpson's comments and found myself getting wound up and totally losing all respect for the man.

Aye, that whole Burton affair was one of his biggest mistakes, IMO - he annoyed a lot of supporters that day, not least because as far as anyone who'd travelled could see, there hadn't actually been any abuse of the type he was referring to.
Made him look arrogant, out of touch, over sensitive and paranoid.

As for hypocrisy of supporters: maybe. And that is the nature of the beast. Some Tesco shoppers rant and rave and complain about tiny things: but Tesco only exists if they keep coming.
