Goalkeeper has been one position where the selection of the best is most difficult to your list add Mike Gibson, Alan Boswell and John Phillips.

Joe Hart is different class, so my next fav has to be Ken Hughes, he was a really good shot stopper i recall and should of played more.

IMO Hart was nowhere near the best when he was here.
I think Wardle.

Ogrizovic - Agree with you Stuey about Joe Hart, that was the point I was making when comparing him and Daniels that some totally out of context, I also think that Button is a very good young keeper too. Any takers for Benny Gall?

IMO Hart was nowhere near the best when he was here. I think Wardle. i thinks thats a good point, Joe Hart is without doubt an awesome keeper, but for Shrewsbury he was raw and in developmental stage. The best keeper i have ever seen for the town was Paul Edwards but that shows my age. I am sure we had many a better keeper before then but he is the first keeper i really remember and enjoyed watching.

Well obviously you didn't watch the game Edwards had against Bristol Rovers at Bath City's ground then Salop. An absolute horror show. That last game of the season against Northampton wasn't too bright either, though we all know who was the real culprit there.
Wardle had one game against Luton Town away that was absolutely stupendous. I'd put him Mulhearn and Ogrizovic in my top three.

Best i have seen is Oggy with Hart close behind.Hart has probably reached a higher level than Oggy but the development happened after he left us.I saw Wardle but to be honest i was so young i can't make a fair assessment on him and would just be going on hearsay.

Alan Boswell was very good at Shrewsbury but couldn't really hack it in the top flight when he went to Wolves. I remember going to watch one of his early games - Wolves v Liverpool - and he let in five or six.

Can't comment before early 70s but for me Bob Wardle was the best I've seen. Oggy and Mulhearn both very good as well. We were lucky to have so many good keepers until late 80s.

It's not been our strongest position in the last 25 years has it?
Best for Shrewsbury would be Oggy (but I only have vague memories of him), Hart and Perks. If Button had stayed I think he'd have made the top 3.
I remember Ron Green making some incredible saves but not being able to catch!

Equal No 1 Mulhearn,Oggy,Wardle..........
If had to choose then I'd go for Mulhearn as he could play in all weathers, wind, rain or showers of sh*t for a full game and always come off at the end without a hair out of place in his immaculate hairdo.............
Best save I can remember from a Town keeper,Joe Hart, away at Peterborough when we won (1-0) I believe, reaching backwards over his head to tip over a tracer bullet from close range, worldclass no exaggeration.

We've had some very good 'keepers over the years, I'd like to mention Paul Miller who was about to become our No.1, taking over from Mike Gibson, and who tragically died at the age of 22.
His death lead to the signing of Alan Boswell.
I reckon that Oggywould have played for England but for the competition for the jersey being much stronger when he was in his prime.

Over the years we have been very fortunate to have some great goalkeepers at the club and this is a good thread to comment and be positive about them
For me, firstly I feel very fortunate to have gone to the Luton v Shrewsbury Town match when Luton were simply amazing. Yet Bob Wardle was incredible. To describe how good he was that day is impossible for words when people use words like spectacular, amazing, brilliant and awesome so much on a day to day level.
Mulhearn was not bad either and Turner pulled a master stroke of signing Oggy when Wardle went. Looking back Steve Perks was not bad either, especially playing at the level we were at then.
Scott Howie was OK as was Ken Hughes.
In more recent times I think fans have got more critical of goalkeepers blaming them for goals and yet having more acceptance for strikers who miss open goals. Hart was a good goalkeeper and so was Button and although some may disagree this was down to Dave Timmins.
However, best keeper in my lifetime was Bob Wardle by a clear mile.

Wardle for me, was only a young 'un at the time so did not see him too often but the amount of 1-0 games we won was testament to his class. Have vivid recollections of Sunday mornings at home getting the News of the World after the old man had finished with it and heading straight for the sport pages to see what superlatives were written about the great man that week.
Am I right in thinking that Liverpool only signed Grobbelaar because of Wardle's injury?
Would have been great to see him be part of such a successful team and would have coped with life at the top level no problem IMO. I think the strength of the side Liverpool send down for his benefit game showed what they thought of him...................

Was also at that Luton game and can just remember laughing with my Dad at how good Wardle was! Some of the saves from that game are on the meadow memories dvd! He was quality and if he had been a tad taller England squad wouldnt of been out of the question so my number 1. 2/ Hart, thought he stood out from day 1 3/ Oggy let some daft ones in but tremendous goalkeeper. 4/ Perks [ William brookes school bias kicking in!] but did well in the higher leagues. 5/ Edwards/ Button. Different types of keepers but both performed well for us. Never saw much of Mulhearn so cant include him my own top 5 but much respected by my elders!

Bob Wardle was my favourite out of a very good bunch of keepers who played for Town during my first twenty years of watching the Town (up to 1992) He was a very calm, talented keeper and a thoroughly decent bloke. The fact that I put him above Oggy, Ken Mulhearn and Steve Perks to me just shows what a talented keeper he was. I'm not sure that he would have ever become Liverpool's first choice keeper as Grobbelaar was so good (in reply to the riverside Grob was already first choice at Liverpool before Bob went there) but think he would have had a decent career at another top flight club but for the eye injury.

Can anybody remember our pre-league days goalkeepers - Bernard Stretton who was the current at the time English Amateur International, he was a great goalie and then there was Harold Rowley another great goalie and then when we obtained League status, there was Pat Egglestone. All of these guys were top class, Shrewsbury has been blessed with really great goalkeepers through the years. Regarding Alan Boswell's transfer to Wolves, I was an ardent supporter of Wolves at that time going to each home game and when Alan joined Wolves I was totally dismayed to see that the other Wolves player's were not receptive to him being in the team and the defence blatantly left Alan exposed, I can clearly remember saying to the supporters around me that there is another goal coming, when Wolves were supposedly attacking, as it was quite obvious they were leaving it open for a quick attack from the opposition and leaving Alan to pick the ball out of the net numerous times. From my statement to the supporters of there's another goal coming and me adding not for us but against us, the Wolves attack lost the ball and it was pumped down the ground, the defence was left stranded and hey bingo it was in the Wolves net and you could read the players faces - that will sort him. I can see it all even now, so ended Alan Boswell as Wolves keeper!

Shrewsbury owe a huge debt to Ken Mulhearn. In the early part of season 1978-79 he virtually single-handedly kept us in games which finished 1-0 or 0-0. I think he was then injured and replaced by Bob Wardle. Two of our top keepers on the books at the same time.

Am I right saying that Mulhearn, Oggie and Hart all played cricket too? sure I am Id go for Oggie as my fav, but I do recall that Luton game where Wardle was simply outstanding. With reguards to that Northampton game that someone brought up, I presume the blame is layed at the door of Mr R Turner ESQ, well try laying the blame at the door Of Bond who had the perfect defender on the bench though because he didnt get on with him didnt bring him on...ie Dean Spink

Thought once Hart was properly in the team (as opposed to the trot outs he got in the Conference) that he looked pretty damn good.
Dislodged a fans faviourate and promotion hero in Scott howie and I believe in his first full season as number one was voted into the League 2 team of the year. When he was transfered, he was already head and shoulders above anything else in or around this league, as can be seen by his quick development from League two player to established premierleague and england squad player.
