I will be running my first ever marathon in New york on November 7th this year, Has any one off here ever run it? if so any advice would be very much appreciated, It is not clear on what time it starts, some say to get to the start at Statten island for about 6am Also reading some of the reviews of people that have done it is making me very nervous already, apparently the last 3 miles to central park is uphill

I have never run New York but i have run London 5 times. A few general marathon tips are)
1. Make sure you vaseline yr nipples/ feet (stops buring/ blisters) 2. Be careful if u take sweets off people (rumours of laxitives slipped in) 3. Keep yrself hydrated 4. Work out yr pacing and get used to running at that pace b4 hand 5. ENJOY YOURSELF AND HAVE A GREAT TIME

Likewise, I have never run New York but have done London twice. My number one tip would be to get your name printed on the front of you shirt. Having people screaming your name in encouragement at 20 odd miles is a MASSIVE help. My second tip would be to make sure you enjoy yourself, take in all the surroundings and remember every mile. In order to enjoy yourself you will need to make sure you run at a pace that you are comfortable with (so do plenty of training!). I would recommend doing at least 1 run of 20+ miles 4 weeks before race day. Try to make sure you do this with the help of other people who can provide you with drinks/jelly babies en route. Thanks for the replies The most i have done in training is 17 miles which was last weekend, could not have done the extra 9 have also done 3 half marathons the best time is 1hr 53, so hoping to do New York in around 4 and a half hrs, did not give it a thought about the laxatives

Good luck...
I did Leicester marthon last year, and have a deffered place of Entry in the 2011 London Marathon...
I did a longest run of 20 miles in traning... it was a menal thing once i got past that mark i thought how bad could it be (answer very!)
Pace is the key, a couple of miles slightly slower, might mean you avoid having to walk the last three. have you got a sat nav Garmin type thing, I find these great for helping work out your pace so you dont go off to fast and blow up near the end!
Also dont know if you have ever used them but the gels you can get from running shops are a live saver for me, when you have nothing left, these can give you a little burst of engery that can see you through a tough time... + you know that there are no laxatives in them!

Interesting that, I don't like gels as the drop off is too much. I always take some sultanas with me when I'm doing a long run / marathon. Interesting what you say about pacing, I don't know if it's just me but I find holding a steady pace comes pretty naturally. The last marathon I did my 10k splits were with 20-30 seconds of each other. I think you can become bogged-down with worrying about pacing. I agree it's important to get your pace right, but you should be able to find your natural pace and get in to that groove. The only thing I'd say is don't get ahead of yourself. The first marathon I did I got to 18 miles and felt good so I upped the pace aiming for a sub-3.30 and ended up finishing in 4hrs 1min. So whatever you feel like I'd say definately just stick to your plan. If you want to, some people join 'pace groups' which have experienced runners setting a steady pace. Mainly though, just enjoy it. It doesn't matter how much it may or may not hurt - when you cross that finish line the feeling of achievement blows that away!

Gels, Bannana, Sultanas, each to there own... I just found them easy to carry and take while running, and some of them are quite nice... bit of isotonic Lucazade and im all set... for the gels I really dont use them till very near to the end of a race say last 5 miles and managed to keep taking them after each other avoiding the drop off really. best prep is a good meal before the race the night before and makeing sure your totally hydrated.
As for paceing.. I honestly really struggle to stop my self going off to fast... at Leister I did the first half marathon near my pb for HM 1h35m and then clogged my way around the rest of it for a 3.58 finish! I was dieing near the end and cramped up badley..worse as you have some many people going past you its dispiriting!
After Christmass I got the Garmin for my LM traning, and imidiatley it sorted those problems out.... 4 weeks before the LM (and just before I got a hernia which put me out of the bloody thing playing for the ASFC) I did 20 miles (in the Ashby 20mile race) at really even pace each mile the whole way through for 2.42 (which was bang on what i was hopeing for to do a 3.30 marathon!). Mentally for me I knew where i was each mile in terms of what i should be doing, too away the mental caculations in my head which after 15+ miles im not longer capable of doing!
And yes enjoy it, certinly my first marathon was the hardest sporting achivement I have ever done, but the feeling at the end and for weeks afterwards was great.. I think everyone should have a go at traning and doing a marathon, you will be suporised what you body is capable of!
Intresting Question for the runners on B and A...
What are your PBs for the following distances? 5k 10k HM Marathon
Lastly has anyone ever ran anything more than a marathon? Like an ultra race?

Never done anything more than a marathon, but I'm doing this in April next year... Link------> Snowdon to London PB's are 3:36:12 marathon, 1:34:? half, 41:45 10k. Never done a 5k race, should get round to it actually. Hoping to do a 3hr10min marathon by the end of the year and want to get a sub-1.30 half and sub-40min 10k by this time next year. Reckon I should be able to, but the proof is in the pudding!

Shrews81 I would be belighted with you HM and Marathon times For the record mine were 5k - 19.57 (god it me so long to get sub 20!) Telford 5k 2009 10k - 42.37 Weston park 2008 (three attempts later I still cant beat this stuck at 43.00) HM - 1.35.12 - Ironbridge 2009 (Loved this race) the 2nd of three conseucitve HMs in a row over three weekends Marathon - the 1.57.54 at Leicester last year (But 3.30 was on the cards for sure at London last year! Annoying)

Only up running last April at the grand old age of 50+ a few yrs in preparation for the great north run, and got the running bug, 5k= 29 mins 10k= this years Muller 53 mins half marathon = 1 Hr 53 mins 24 secs Marathon= hoping for around 4hrs 30mins

Yeah i was in great shape going into it and it was my first ever marathon so a bit of inexperience hit in and went through the first 18 miles far to quick! We following year after a 1 1/2 of uni was a different matter as had no training and had beefed up to play back row in rugby so managed 3 3.30 and the rest has been down hill since. I have applied this year for the london again and if i get in will try and get back into 3.30 shape after a few yrs of rugby playing and little else exercise!

My wife ran New York 6 years ago and it was a great experience. The crowds were amazing. A few things of note
1. You do have to get up early to get to the start line 2. The course is quite hilly. From what I remember, the run up to the finish line is a moderate gradient 3. The weather on the day of the race was hot, whilst the preceding and following days were chilly, so take the whole range of kit
Good luck, you should have a great time, no matter how quickly or slowly you run

Think the tips regarding getting to the start location are standard for these massive events where you are looking at 35k runners in one place.
Regarding the gels, my tip would be to find out what type of gels are being provided (if any) en route by the organiser. Normally get this from the event website. If you are going to use them, accustom your body to them by using that brand throughout your training as each manufacturer has a different mix of ingredients which can, if your body is not ready for it, wreak havoc on your race....
