Gerrard captain then. After the season he's had I'm not sure that the extra burden will do him any good...we shall see. Of course, Ferdinand may be okay - Henry Winter didn't seem to think so though.

Great. A player who openly admits he doesn't care.

Could be a blessing in disguise!!
I'm probably in the minority here - but I don't think Ferdinand is that good and is over rated. Positional play isn't good, tries to be too fancy Dan and gets caught with the ball.
Whoever comes in will do a better defensive job IMO.

I think he is over rated too and the fact he has been plagued by injuries all season means he could be a liability.I think he is the same as many of our players though, overhyped.

If he's out I prefer to see Sol Campbell brought in than anyone else. He might be a bit long in the tooth now, but he's just had an outstanding 2nd half of the season for the Goons (before any smartalec makes any comparisons, he wasn't with Secombe, Milligan, Bentine and Sellars. I know he's old, but not that bloody old).

[/img]
Not sure how you dreamt that up?! Nothing like supporting the team...
I refer you to Mr. Carragher's book. Something along the lines of he would rather miss a penalty for England than Liverpool. Wouldn't have had him anywhere near the squad in the first place. Oh, and as for supporting the team, get over yourself mate.

I think it was an error of judgement to say it in print, but I can empathise with him on this. He's played for the club his whole career, to him it's not just another paymaster but part of who he is. I think that a lot of people in his position would think the same, just not say it out loud. Anyway, back to the centre of our defence - worrying lack of pace.

Says in the same article that David James has an ongoing problem with his knee too Joseph. How can Green be in front of Hart after their respective seasons?

Carragher won't play in the middle, I seem to remember Capello saying before that he'll only play right back if he plays. I expect Ferdinand's will be nothing serious, unfortunately.

He never said he didn't care, just that it'd hurt more. Totally different things. I think he's worthy of inclusion, he'll put his balls on the line more than some of the players whether he said that in his book or not.

I'm well aware of what was written but I am able to see it as an ill judged way of spicing up a ghost-written book rather than being daft enough to take it as a tacit indication that the player doesn't care about playing for England. Do you really think Carragher will sink our World Cup dreams by not caring enough, maybe forgetting there's a match on or playing in his flip-flops because he couldn't be ar$ed to bring his boots?! Thanks for the patronising advice too

Thanks for the patronising advice too Will you be comfortable in him walking up to take a penalty in a shoot-out after what he said? I wouldn't, simple. Patronising advice, well, if you hadn't insulted my support for England, there would be no need for a response.

Ferdinand is finished in my opinion. His body just can't handle it anymore
Carragher must partner Terry if we are have any chnce of success, Upson is average at best, there are too many concernc over King's knee, and Dawson will be like a fish out of water

Should have picked Jagielka. The Liverpool defence as a whole were a shambles, I would heap most of the blame on young Insua, lost count of the number of times he left his man at the back post for simple tap ins Phil Jagielka was selected against Spain a couple of years ag, and was totally out of his depth. Carragher has been there and done it on the inernational stage before, and also in the Champions League with Liverpool. Experience is invaluable in the World Cup

Rio got turned by Heskey - could be a good thing he is out. Sam - regarding Carra - One of the best Centre Backs to ever come out of England. Add to the fact he can play anywhere across the back four or as a holding midfielder means he is of use to the team. He went down in my estimation when he turned his back on England although I could understand why - travelling all over when not playing with Brown and Neville ahead of him! WTF! As well as starting a family. However he has slotted in and played well and has been very humble in his approach - something messers Scholes and Shearer did not do. They sold out their Country when being selected and scholes turned down Capello for this summer, another Manc player putting club before country. In regards to his penalty 'comments' some people are very serious aren't they
