as Pilch mentioned a bit back, I do have a few issues
my old pc won't connect to the net. I have an external drive to try and download old files to, but the pc does not even recognise that it is connected
When i try to open other files (photos, music etc) i get the message Critical Error - RPC Server is unavailable. From searching the net, it seems the problem is the Registry, but I can't do anything on it.
I just want my old files if possible

i guess the external was protected to your old pc somehow i'v had a quick look online too and it seems a problem without a clear answer not sure if a data recovery programme will help your best bet might be to get the old pc working

take the hard drive out of the pc if you can and set it up as a slave on another machine, this will enable you to access it and extract the files you need.
i don't know you scooter but sounds like pilch knows what he's doing and maybe able to help.
otherwise PM me and i'll help if i can
