Following on from the debate about Quinn, makes you ask what level of club do you think Shrewsbury has the potential to become? Forget the "good old days" - too much has changed in the way clubs are run, financed and controlled for there ever to be a level playing field in which clubs can compete. Money is the main factor - based on levels of support from a strong fan base, and the level of funding from benefactors - sadly there's not many Abramoviches, and we don't want a Shaw (do we?).
I reckon we could sustain a club with attendances of 5-6000, provided we had the quality (both in playing staff and facilities) to merit it. To me that dictates a realistic possibility of Div 2 football. To get there, we need to build the club in an organised and structured way. Phase 1 being return to Div 3. That is not as easy as our most vociferous posters might imagine - we have to adjust to Conference pitches, refs and locations first and then adapt a team to exploit those conditions. Playing with flair is not an option on boggy pitches. Am I the only one who thinks Chester's season picked up after they got Stamp - a big hulking forward to hit with high balls? Route 1 stuff really.
My hopes are: Div 3 by the end of next season, 2-3 seasons in Div 3 - build the New Meadow, consolidate finances, optimise the youth academy, stabilise the management and coaching set up; Div 2 by 2008/9?

I would say mid table in Division Two, though clubs such as Rotherham, Crewe, Walsall and Gillingham have shown they can more than compete in Division One.

Unless you have a very strong financial footing and a large fan support (see Plymouth, Hull and Cardiff), to talk about five year plans is absolute folly in my book.
Football by its nature is a game of chance.
Is Wrexham able to 'sustain' a Division 1 side? They've got an outside chance of being one come August this year.
Several flaws in your argument. Doncaster and Yeovil don't play Route 1 football but both got promoted last year and have flourished this year.
All I ask is that we build a squad capable of challenging for promotion from this league (done) and ensure that it does so (not done).
I will accept the role that luck has to play.........

'That is not as easy as our most vociferous posters might imagine - we have to adjust to Conference pitches, refs and locations first and then adapt a team to exploit those conditions.'...what? Your having a laugh aren't you? I can just imagine Manchester or Arsenal demanding time and patients from their supporters if ever they were to make the drop...it's these refs lads, it's the pitch, it's simply not Old Trafford...
Your successful over a season cos you’re the better management, better team and you have better players...lets not put anything down to playing conditions, refs, grounds etc...some people are really making too much of this in my opinion. I appreciate it may take some adjustments if you were to be promoted as the standard of football is better, but when you go down a level? I gather some will point to Chester, Hereford and other teams that have come down...the reason they didn't bounce back up is because they didn't have the finances in place to appoint the better managers, the better players...we do...as did Lincoln when they bounced right back up (yes it put them in debt big time but it got them up)...
Realistically I would say Town could hold there own in the Second Division...anything more would require a very wealthy, free spending chairman...

Stuttgarter du alte Papnase!
Normally I'd go with your views, but since when could you liken our drop from Div 3 to the Conference with Man U or the Arsenal going to Div 1?? Your darn right they wouldn't accept such excuses, but then they are on a completely different footing to us. Amazing how they do blame the pitches etc. when they have to play us though? Everton for example.....
My point really was about having to adapt your play to the circumstances you are in, and the variation of skill, amenities and officiating is more varied in the Conference than anywhere else we've played. As for your thoughts on managers and players, haven't Telford got at least as good management as us? They certainly have as many, if not more players from higher leagues (excluding Challis now of course!). If it was as simple as buying the best, Chelsea would be top of everything!
And going back to your Man U scenario - can you imagine the fallout if they did get relegated?? The axe would come crashing down! Wenn ich nur ein Wunsch hatte - das waere es!
