Went to watch this excellent game last night.
Must have been close to 2000 travelling Doncaster fans - the ones I encountered in the chip shop were pretty unpleasant, bragging about their massive away support and shouting at the staff about prices and saying they bet they wished they played them every week etc.
Whilst I felt like responding to them by quoting some of their attendances of around 1200 when they were last in Division 3, the Rochdale faithful did it much more succinctly by singing "Where were you when you were s**t?" to them the entire game!
Doncaster had a few moments of quality and at one point in the first half looked as if they would overwhelm the Dale. But through team spirit, organisation and good goalkeeping (all of which we lacked from March-May last year), Doncaster were foiled.
Second half, and Rochdale missed a sitter through Kevin Townson before Lee McEvilly headed home with a quarter of an hour left to go. I actually found myself cheering the goal - very rare for me at anything other than a Shrewsbury or Wales game. Actually, also fairly rare for me at Shrewsbury and Wales games......
Sadly, Doncaster bundled home an (undeserved over 90 minutes) injury time equaliser in a manner familiar to any Shrewsbury fan who saw the home games to Torquay, Wrexham and Macclesfield last year.
Rochdale are a fantastic club. Great, loyal support, a cracking ground (if we can build 4 stands like they've built 2 of theirs, we won't need to worry about atmosphere) and good pubs.
I sincerely hope they stay up, and that we can get back to our regular trips to Spotland.
