Still probably the thorniest issue of the season, is Jimmy Quinn the man for us?
There are many who think he hasn't cut it, doesn't know his best team, has not spent money wisely and is tactically inept. As a "big" club, with money in the bank, Luke Rodgers on the pitch and a decent sized squad, surely we should be riding high and blowing away all and sundry - Dagenham & Redbridge? Pah!
So, what's the counter argument? Well, I don't have the answers, but I do have my own perspective. JQ is a decent man, with a good pedigree as a player, and the foundations of a reasonable management career. He is still a bit of a "player" who can teach a few tricks and he can at least argue that he can still do a bit on the pitch. But, there are very, very few managers who can guarantee quality and consistency in only 8 months. Especially when you only have 3 regular players (?) from last season and a mostly new squad to work with. You have hopes, but you also have doubts. You want some players to be your bedrock - O'Connor? Tinno? Rodgers? And you want others to give you flair, creativity, passion - Cramb? Aiston? Tolley? But, they get injured, fall out, feel a bit overlooked?
In reality, what would you really expect? Optimists want a steam-roller ride back to the top. Pessimists - we don't have any do we? Realists - that's most of us, but in truth, "reality" is exactly what it says on the tin - its what we've got, right here, right now. And for most, its not enough.
Me, I think we have shown what we can do, but failed to keep a steady course. However, given the huge variety of teams, pitches, officials and locations we've had this year, consistency takes on a whole new meaning. Wouldn't you try to mix things up a bit to cope with some of these variables? How else will you know what does and doesn't work? The debate goes on - what do you think? Can you justify it? Can you do better than get behind the lads and sing your hearts out?

Moss, Tolley, Aiston, Lowe, Rodgers
That's nearly a half a starting line-up JQ had from last season.
I think JQ deserves until the end of the season. The last two performances have been encouaging and have got my confidence in the team up a notch or two.
If JQ picks a team that plays to our strengths (4-4-2 with balance on both sides etc) rather than worrying about the opposition then I think he'll get my confidence back a bit more and a bit more.
If he doesn't, and we miss out on the playoffs then he will certainly have to go.

This debate will rage untill
A) we go up - hailed a hero and chants of 3 more years B) We stay down - Quinn out ect
For me my main problem was not the results - dissapointing as many have been - it was the standard of football which in general was lower than last season away from home!!! In the last 2 games we have seen a turnaround in the standard and Quality and fighting spirt that had been lacking since Christmass i belive. But is this another falce Dawn this season, another win in the next two would be nice but for Quinn to get back "on side" with the fans 6 points is a must
Old git - You have to remember he has made a lot of mistakes this season many of which could (and still could) have cost us even a chance of having a go at getting out of the division but he is still in there and so as yet he will get a stay of execution from the majority of fans (even if most of the time we one here as a group do not agree see the last few polls!!!)

The fact that for a few months since Greg has been out of the side he has made do with Sedge at left back when Ross Stephens would do a better job still didnt fill me with any real optimism. Its taken him so long to put Streety in his real position, his continued switch to 4-3-3 and his thoughts that himself should be required still show that he has a lot to learn. Last night was a fine win and one I didnt think would happen. Its good to feel optimistic and again if only a bit, lets hope it carrys on and on.

If we make the play-offs, he is on course and meeting targets.
He said play-offs this season in reality and he is delivering at the moment. To demand his head on a block for meeting the goals that were set at the begining of the season, the goals that we have all known about, would be not only stupid, barmy and mad, it would also be short sighted, impatient and unfair on the man who is living up to "realistic" targets that most of us would and should be happy with.
I know we've been crap at times, but there is such a huge gap in style and team etos between the Conference and div3 that it was always going to take time to adapt a team full of ex-league players to the situation that has engulfed us.
He is on target to meet expectations. Cut the short-sightedness and get real. he has a two year contract in which to deliver. We've given him 8 months, he's not failing, so get behind him and give him a chance instead of expecting/hoping him to fail so you can all feel vindicated in your witch hunts.

Agree with Old Git. We have to be realistic. Quinny has been given two years and we knew and accepted that when he was appointed.
Did we honestly think we would go straight back up? I didn't although I would love to - trust me life is isn't like that - if it was we wouldn't have been relegated in the first place.
Look at Chester and Hereford, it has taken them time and experience to be at the top of the Conference and we will be there possibly next season when our team have realised that the Conference isn't a walkover.
We must be patient - last season was a nightmare for all of us but we must put it in the past, support our manager and team and keep optimistic after all at the moment we are back on track.

I will be disappointed if we dont get into the play-offs but I think it is unlikely now, even if we finish outside that Quinn will be sacked- the Board cannot guarantee a better manager than him and if they take the gamble on a new manager they can add a severence pay-off to the already tight budget for next season. Fans seem to be giving managers less and less time to produce the goods and I think this may be contributing to our demise

I do expect to us to go straight up...I strongly believe that off the field everything is in place for Shrewsbury Town to be successful at this time, at this level.
All that was needed was a good managerial appointment...we are in with a very good chance of the play-offs and still in with a good chance of promotion. But anything less is, in my opinion, a failure...
...if we can keep free of injuries and keep a settled side then I'm quietly confident we can make the play-offs and have a good go at promotion...

You make some decent points OG and a good defence of Quinn. I hope he proves me wrong but he doesn't fill me with great confidence. We are told to have patience and that it will come right given time but the problem is we don't have much time and Quinn seems very slow to respond to obvious deficiencies with the team. Months to deal with the left back position and the lack of width has only been temporarily solved.
I'd like to think he was building an improving team but to be honest apart from odd blips we haven't really improved very much if at all. If we don't make it this season is there any reason to suppose it will be much different next season?
What did I expect at the start season well I thought we might make a challenge for the championship but probably not win it. In reality, we've never made a serious bid to challenge Chester or Hereford but ought to make the play offs.
oh and it would be nice to play with a bit style from time to time. is that to much to ask.
