I'm posting a few things while I can!! This things being an absolute pig.
It may be that my ISP is "upgrading" it's service- but, meanwhile, I can't even get online in the daytime. (I usually check in before work- then again at lunchtime, before I set out for Liverpool.)
Also- the pigging thing is hard to shut down lately- I've been forced to just switch off. Then, scandisk runs when I switch on again, gets stuck till I hit one of the function keys.
Looked up in a book- decided to try running a scandisk thorough check- then it said it re-started 10 times, becauses it was re-writing or something. I gave up and cancelled.
I've got rid of temporary internet files- and checked if there's anything else to get rid of on - I've got plenty of space.
I don't know what else I can do except chuck the thing!! I want a new one but for next season I'm seriously thinking of asking my family for a special birthday present for my (Yuk!) special birthday- a family stand season ticket, for me n'Leah. (I'm aiming to give up Saturday working.)
I might have to choose- new computer- or season ticket!
I'm just a technophobe- Any of you guys suggest what I can do? Does it sound as if my P.C is about to expire?

I'm sure there are better qualified techies out there than me but I'll give it a go as no-one else has responed!
It certainly sounds like your hard disk has lost it's way, and some files have become corrupted or you have a nasty arse virus or your hard disk is on it's way out.
Either way my solution would be this:
I would format the computer and start from fresh. I'm afraid it's not something that you can do as (most of the time) you have to go in to dos and do things manually.
If you have all the original disks (cd's, floppy's etc) I would take it to a local PC dealer (not a PC world type place) and ask them to do it, this should cost no more than £25-30. Save all your passwords, e-mails, settings etc as you will have to lose everything.
If you anyone who can do this for you then go for it as it's alot cheaper than getting a new computer. It could be that you need a new hard disk, this could cost between £30-50.
If you’re not playing high-powered computer games then it isn't really nessercery to buy a new computer!
Drop a PM if I can help anymore.

If you drop the computer off with me before a home match i can check it out for you. No need to pay £30 as thats a rip-off, you will need to have a full copy of windows 98 (Or whatever your system is) as i will probably need to run a repair or re-installation depending on the symptoms.
When are you in Shrewsbury next?

Thanks, Kickin' ! It seems to be O.K today- but it's temperamental- and I have a suspicion, as you say, that some files have become corrupted- a thorough scandisk run is supposed to put things right, according to my book ("Easy Windows 98!! It has to be easy for me. ) But, as I said, scan disk wouldn't run properly, yesterday. What I'll probably do is collar my son-in-law when he's next up this way. He got it for me (it was surplus to requirements when Seimens moved out of Telford) and he set it up for me. Mr Wiggy's not much better than me- P.C. wise- in fact he's worse!! I wouldn't let him near it. He lost a load of stuff off our first computer! (Yet he can mend most other things - and did his own car repairs.) That's really good of you to offer to look at it for me. I'll try to get it done "in situ" first. As you said, it's really fine for what I need. I use "Word" for my work stuff- and Th'Internet for fun and "socialising". I'd much rather buy a season ticket for next season than a new computer! I'm hoping to make it to matches on the 13th and 17th.

Windows 98 has a patch to correct the problem of not shutiing down properly - system hangs on message "windows is shutting down".
This patch is available from the micro$oft website but be warned as there are two versions of windows 98 and thus there are two patches.
If you're struggling let me know which version of 98 and I'll post the link to the patch.
Oh and it doesn't always solve the problem!

Firstly MS has dozens of patches for 98 shutdown problems try them all but don't expect a cure! Secondly, try running scandisk from Dos Lastly, your hardrive maker should have some useful utilities on their website - Seagate for instance do. Use all of them and repair as necessary. You have got a backup handy for when your drive dies?
