With the recent events in London and certain premiership players. Is it libelous to mention names from what you have heard or read, as long as you don't actually point a direct finger towards the person.
For instance, if I had heard that JP_SHREW fancied Harmer Hills cows and stated it was only here-say, could JP sue me?

To be honest I don't think anyone is 100% sure of the answer.
But the problem is that when such big named stars are involved it's not worth risking it to find out.

You can not name them - even though at least four names have already clearly been suggested in other arenas. You may recall recently that David Beckham proved this in court when referring to an alleged article on a website. The ruling then suggested that the passing on of such "hearsay" was also open to prosecution. The names were mentioned several times on the rivals message boards and they have done the only thing they can sensibly do to protect themselves against possible prosecution. Sky's report may have contained a photo of "an archive match" that could have been interpreted as a big hint. Interestingly - as yet there is no legal precidence for a person accused of rape not to be named - especially as a formal statement has been made. So how can a gagging order on the press be maintained? A certain "Blackburn player" tried this and failed with regard to a general article too you may recall.

Ant - could you tell me, is it JP Shrew or the cows that are big named stars according to your repy higher in the thread? Having thought deeply on the matter, I consider that it must be the cows as your phrase was in the plural
