Going back to 1977 Town had just beaten Portsmouth 6-1 in an old div 3 game, I said to who I was with “we’ll go up this season, we are awesome”, then a few weeks/months later Brian Hornsby is sold to Sheffield Wednesday and because no one is brought into replace him we drop down and finish the season mid-table. Then in the summer of 1980 and after 2 seasons to remember Paul Maguire leaves Town for Stoke City for £250,000, had he stayed I still say to this day we would have been so close to gaining promotion to the top flight that next season, but we end up scr@ping down the bottom…because yet again no replacement for Maguire is found.
We then have 8 seasons in the old div 2, now no one moans about lack of ambition or stars like Maclaren, Cross, Pearson, Ogrizovic following Hornsby and Maguire out of the GM door as they wanted to better themselves, but is a replacement found for them?...NO….Do we as fans complain? NO.
We then move into the “Belly Up” period which the club get relegated to the old div 3 and then the new div 3 within 3 seasons and we the fans still seem to sit back as we are used to the knock backs.
Things go ok for a few seasons, we get promoted, we have a couple of cup runs and also reach a Wembley final and guess what? Relegation. But, a large majority say the man in charge shouldn’t be sacked as he’ll get us back up…even though the last year and a bit it clearly shows his impersonation of a technician is rather poor.
The club then employ an old favorite for money cutting purposes , but he falls out with a couple of our better players in basically a squad “man made” or should that read “King made” squad ready for Non league football. So, one player leaves to better himself (I’ve heard that before) and the other gets given a free transfer. Good move by King NOT!, as within 2 years he moves on for £200,000. But does anyone complain? Not really.
We then come oh so close to relegation into Non League, but aided by a chairman’s hardy words “This will never happen again” were just happy to have stayed up.
Things then improve for a couple of seasons, but then the majority let a famous cup win shadow over a very poor league season, the negative amongst us are told “ he’ll sort it out”…BIG MISTAKE 6-0 at Boston should have been his farewell.(I’m not blaming one supporter for sticking by him).
We are now a Non League club, with a group of League players playing possibly- no definitely the worst football I have ever witnessed by STFC, managed by a man who basically hasn’t a clue what do to when the players get on the pitch. He gives players instructions which they fail to follow, formations which are different ever 5 minutes and has a backroom staff far TOO LARGE and NOT NEEDED!
Are we going to sit back as usual?
Are we going to continue backing him?
Normally we take things as they come/on the chin and accept the inevitable, are we going to do that now?
THE PLAYERS IN THE MAIN ARE GOOD ENOUGH, THE MANAGEMENT ISNT…QUINN OUT.
