I think both sets of Shropshire fans set unrealistic goals at the start of this season.
Telford had such a close-season of turmoil that success was never going to be easy. We have got a side at the moment that is in the mould of one built by Stan Storton: You're never quite sure what you're going to get! I think this is because we have so few experienced CONFERENCE / NON-LEAGUE players.
MJ has bought consistently from the league and although some of these players have been very good, life in the conference is very different to the league and these players do need time to adjust. The pace and time you get on the ball are two examples of this.
For Shrews, it was always going to be a tough ask to get out of this league at the first attempt. I think I am right in saying only Lincoln and Colchester (?) have done this at the first attempt?
These were in the days of the ex-league club remaining full-time and the conference sides all being part-time. I think that it a common misconception that clubs will go straight up or that being full-time is a guarantee of success these days!
I think if Shrews do miss out this season (and I think they will over 2 legs in a play-off against Hereford or Aldershot, I have been saying this for weeks and weeks), it will be interesting to see how some of the players react and also, how some of their fans react.
I think it will be difficult for you to emulate this season's crowds once the novelty of going to places like Leigh wears off! Unless, of course, you are walking the league.
Both clubs need to make adjustments close-season. MJ seems to be working to a plan and he needs top bring in about 4 quality players (pref. non-league) over the course of the summer. JQ, on the other hand, judging by what you guys say, seems to lack ideas and tactical awareness, which must be a major worry.
If Shrews don't go up, and I don't think you will, it will be difficult next season to emulate this season's achievements. I would expect that a number of players will leave and it will be another summer of re-building.
