Hi there
Right seemingly simple question but one that I think will keep you thinking for quite a while - name the best 11 (assume a 442 formation) players that you have SEEN play for Shrewsbury Town - by seen I actually mean seen in the flesh as opposed to videos or from other people's reports (e.g. people under 40 naming Arthur Rowley).
Name your age and first time that you saw Shrewsbury Town play.
To start: Me, Age 30, first Shrewsbury game 1987
Goal - Steve Perks (tough call but given that Perks was our no1 for a number of seasons in what is now the championship, has to be him - Joe Hart only played in 2 or 3 divisions lower Right back - Wayne Williams - I simply have to go for him - seriously can't think of another memorable right back more worthy Left back - Tommy Lynch - without a doubt, 100% commitment everytime, legend. Centre back - Mark Blake - I was too late to see McClaren, Pearson or Linighan, however I thought Blake was massively underrated and had great ability and pace. Centre back - Dave Walton - solid Right wing - Mickey Brown - stalwart over several spells Left wing - Darren Currie - again very underrated in my view, and is someone who i saw do things i've not seen before Centre midfield - Tony Kelly - without doubt the best midfielder I've ever seen for Shrewsbury Town. Centre midfield - Mark Taylor - he was an unsung hero I felt but very good Striker - John McGinlay - without doubt the best striker I've ever seen for Shrewsbury, played only a couple of seasons but was superb and I remember being gutted when he left Striker - Carl Griffiths - has to be, several seasons with town with one season in particular being prolific
Honourable mentions - Joe Hart (obviousy reasons), Wayne Clarke - a superb footballer very much the 'Teddy Sheringham' during his succesfull time here.

First game in 1976
1 Bob Wardle - loved him so much I used to like it when the opposition attacked 2 Jake King - corner flick ons and overlapping on the wing = easy nomination 3 Carleton Leonard - probably was not a good as Johnson/Lynch but nostalgia gets the nod 4 Tony Kelly - Heart says Turner, head says Kelly 5 Nigel Pearson - Steve Hayes gets a honorable mention ! 6 Jackie Keay - Mark Blake comes a close second, as does Linighan, McLaren 7 David Tong - sorry Mickey Brown 8 Gerry Daly - just beats McNally and/or Atkins and Chapman or Hornsby 9 Wayne Clarke - Id love to put Steve Biggins in but its got to be Clarke 10 John McGinlay - in all honesty, dont think anyone comes a close second 11 Paul Maguire - could have Hackett/Tester etc - but Maguire is a no brainer

First game 1986, age 31. Obsessive periods 1986-1995 (then University got in the way) and 1999-2005 (then Gary Peters way) 2008-2076 (then alzeimers got in the way)...... GK - Joe Hart - Perks would be the closest but Joe is by far the best goalkeeper to have played since 86. And I absolutley love watching him play for city (and England, it seems). And I met him out in Manchester last summer. RB - Wayne Williams - not a whole lot of competition. Why is that? And he overtook me in the Shrewsbury fun run (circa 1987 LB - Tommy Lynch - no need to ask. What a legend. Met him in the gym a couple of times. CB - Nigel Pearson - Only saw him for a season but he was awesome. Also loved watching him out play Mark Hughes to win (as captain) the League cup for Sheffield Weds (and big Ron - where did it all go Ron?). Never met him though. CB - Mickey Heathcote - A real toughy. We have always seemed to be blessed with great centre halves (apart from recently perhaps - sorry Kelvyn). Other candidates could be Linighan, Walton, Blake, Williams, Bomber and Tinson but I'll go for Mickey cos he was consistently brilliant, bagged some vital goals and I met him once in Morrisions. Okay that's a lie CM - Bernard McNally - best player to have played for Shrewsbury in 25 years (apart from Joe Hart maybe) CM - Tony Kelly - best passer of the ball of all time. And I met him in a pub in Liverpool during the Mickey Brown/Exeter run in. Had a good chat and he quite clearly loves the club. An awesome talent. RM - Mark Taylor - I know he played mainly central but he was a good utility player (although thinking about it he might have been on the left at times rather than right). Couldn't leave him out - a stunning player for the shrews. No, I haven't. LM - Sam Aiston. Sorry. CF - John McGinlay. No explanation needed. CF - David Geddis - Scored only 15 goals for the Shrews and I was at 12 of them as a young impressionable 11-12 year old so my memory may be playing tricks on me. I loved him. Genuinely. Sub - Dean Spink - What an absolute star. - Mickey Brown - Was he actually any good?!!! - Carl Griffiths - Scored goals all the time (even in the top (division) yet never 'made it'. Why is that? - Victor Kasule - not just for comedy value - Paul Tester - yes, I met him. Manager - Probably Fred Davies despite the Wembley fiasco. Played some good stuff under John Bond. Shame he was such an idiot. Unforgivable treatment of Deano. Good football under McNeil as well (before we got relegated!) Moments - Steve Perks's last minute penalty save v Man City - Victor's winner v Leeds (great moment made greater# by the broken toe celbration!!) - Dean Spink lifting the Div 3 trophy - Jemson's winner v Everton - Trevor Challis's penalty Best Ground - Gay Meadow

I enjoy these lists but they are very dependant often on our heroes when we were young (eg I suspect Cookie will appear on many of these lists in 20 years time) But as I say I enjoy them so will go for Hart Gregory Fellows Turner Walton Kelly Atkins Dave Roberts Alf Wood Luke Rodgers Alan Groves
Subs Mulhearn,Asamoah,Moir,Jemson,Lynch
I am assuming they were all in the height of their powers so its Luke Rodgers in the season he scored that goal at The Meadow against Rochdale Alf Wood in the season he scored 30 odd goals etc etc Wish I had seen Arthur Rowley play but saw my first game when he had just stopped playing and was maagaer so he could manage the side! If GP was managing the sie I am not sure DaVe Roberts would be picked as I cant recall him ever tracking back!

Alf Wood up front with Luke Rogers and possibly Ian Atkins or is it Mark Atkins in the centre of midfield. Dave Roberts and the much missed Alan Groves on the wings. Tony Gregory and Geoff Fellows as fullbacks - the best fullback pairing in our history !! Graham Turner and Davie Walton as centre backs And the legendary Tony Kelly to spray the ball around. I am going off to have a think but your team is an excellent mix and in my opinion almost impossible to better. notworthy

Age 42 first game 1978
G Steve Ogrizovic RB Jake King LB Tommy Lynch CB Nigel Pearson CB Jack Keay RM Mickey Brown CM Gerry Daly CM Ian Atkins LM Paul Maguire CF John McGinlay CF Wayne Clarke
It was really tough to omit certain players: They are and a big subs bench.
Joe Hart,Colin Griffin, Bernard McNally, Carl Griffths, Davey Tong, Ross Maclaren, Dave Walton, Mark Williams, Darren Tinson & Tony Kelly.
Best moments, being at both Ipswich games on the Riverside like sardines and seeing 'that freekick', i can still see it in my memory now, Jake King chip over the wall Steve Cross gooooooooooalllll!!!!. Oh the atmosphere
The boring game 0-0 against Wigan and to lift that trophy, watching from the family stand with Son & Daughter.
How much would these teams be worth today? All of them don't contain many players of the past few years.

With over 50 years following the Town picking a best XI is a difficult task.
How to chose between strikers, Rowley, McGinley, Frank Clarke, Wayne Clarke, Wood, Bates, Stevens, Shaw, Griffiths.
Wingers Meredith, McGuire, McLaughlin, MacGregor, Whittaker, Kasule, Kenning, Roberts, French, Groves, Brown.
Midfield, Broadbent, Kelly, Irvine, Hemsley, Durban, McLaren, McNally.
Centre back partnerships, Wallace/Moloney, Turner/Griffin, Pearson?Linighan, Williams/Walton - which leaves out individuals like Pountney, Moyes, Holton and Heathcote.
Anyway, I started with our 2 best ever players, Rowley and Broadbent and worked from there.
1. Joe Hart - already played for England so edges out Oggy.
2. Jake King 4. Nigel Pearson 5. Dave Linighan 3. Gordon Skeetch - slightly sentimental choice following his recent passing.
7. Paul McGuire - slight cheat as I wanted him and Jimmy Mac and they can't both play on the left. 8. Peter Broadbent 6. Alan Durban 11. Jimmy McLaughlin
9. John McGinley 10. Arthur Rowley
Some strong characters in there, wouldn't like to chose a skipper!

first game 72
Wardle - unlucky not to have played at the top level King - very very consistant Johnson - our weakest position over he past 30 yrs but Johnson was classy if a little slow Linighan - Linighan and Pearson difficult to imagine a better pairing Pearson - See above Irvine (Sammy) - target for the riverside boo-boys. Talented but again unlucky. Durban - Surely one of the best players ever to have played for us Daly - ditto. A class above. Maguire - Worth a place for his corners alone McGinley - Quite simply the best finisher of the past 30 years. Griffiths - Struggled with the second striker but on his day Carl was a star.
Can't believe I've left out Ross MacClaren, Tony Kelly and my own all time favourite Alex Mcgregor

Hi Nick 44 Went with uncle when I was little but most games from mid 70's onwards. didn't anybody ever rate Brian Hornsby. The free kick him and Sammy Irvine used to try was brilliant when it worked. And what about Sammy Chapman now he added steel to any midfield and would make these so called modern day hardmen wimper.Poor old Stevie Biggins. All we ever used to do was take the mick but when you look back he was sound. He was so unconventional for his time because he came into the game from non league and chased everything, even lost causes giving center halves a good run around

Great choice my friend, Jimmy Mack, first or second period ?[/quote]
First period, the partnership between him and Rowley was lethal and they complimented each other perfectly.
They played together for 3 seasons and scored 160 goals between them, Rowley 87 and Jimmy Mac 73 - 73 goals in 3 seasons from the left wing is mind boggling.
By the time Jim returned in 1967 I was in the RAF and unable to get to many games. However, the stats show a considerable slowing in his scoring rate and I guess he was not the same player without Arthur supplying the ammunition.
