A little gem from Simon Heffer, Daily Mail (I didn't buy the paper, honestly!!! After this- I think I should refuse to have it in the house, ever again!) "With yet more guastly, overpaid, professional footballers disgracing this countery and , in so far that it remains possible, their game, isn't it about time we treated this unpleasant pastime like other pernicious habits? Instead of ripping off Middle England, shouldn't the Treasury impose swingeing taxes on Football? A levy on transfer fees, merchandise, club profits and a windfall tax on the Premiership's prepostererously large salaries ought to go some way towards filling the Chancellor's £15billion black hole." Does anyone fancy answering it? I'm far too angry to trust myself to write anything at the moment!! The e-mail address at the foot of the page is s.heffer@dailymail.co.uk This type of journalism appeals to the sort of right-wing element that is almost dangerously close to BNP in their sentiments (the Daily Mail encourages Xenophobia- then pretend they're anti- Racism. It's THE most blatantly hypocritical paper in the country.) It isn't even good writing either- they're all like boot-licking sheep. Do they get paid per mention of "Middle England " and "Assylum seekers" and "It's costing the tax- payer..." (Middle England? Where is it? It's about as real as "Middle Earth!") Qualifications for being a Daily mail writer- pea-sized brain, outsize predjudice. Oh, the Tory faithful of Shrewsbury will love to nail their colours to this particular mast, won't they? I daren't reply- at least not yet- I'm far too angry! Those Leicester players have actually HELPED the cause of people like that- and the ones who want STFC to be "left to die".

So whats wrong with that?? Havent these ridiculously overpaid, overrated idiots disgraced the game?? Or do you agree with their 'professional' behaviour? Regardless if you agree with his comments or not they are an opinion that are probably supported by millions of non footie fans.

the journo's sentiments are probably shared by football fans too. It's unfortunate that a minority of footballers have tarnished footballs reputation. People do believe and get wound up by what they read and hear in the Media. Perhaps the radical measures he proposes are what is needed to shake the sport up and re-gain credibility. I'd be interested to hear what the 'left wing' solution is to this rash of footballer misdemeanours.

So long as this journalist's comments refer solely to the Premier league, then I more or less concur with his sentiments. It is a combination of greedy Premier clubs like Man Utd and the iniquitous presence of Murdoch's Sky money that have brought us to this sad state of affairs. I remember that it was the rich clubs insistence on keeping all home gate receipts that was the start of the slippery slope as far as the less well off clubs were concerned. Since then a plethora of decisions all benefiting the well off clubs have accentuated the decline of the rest, including ourselves. And do these well off clubs have any concern about their fellow bretheren? Do they hell! Quite the contrary in fact. They are like sharks circling a drowning man. Look at the disgusting rip off perpetrated by Man. Utd in avoiding paying the full transfer fee for Ferdinand by "assisting" Leeds by paying them a % of the money early to relieve them from the pressures of administration. What a nice gesture! So.. these overblown corporate City institutions pay grossly inflated prices often for foreign mercenaries, cough up ridiculous salaries which rightly causes indignation amongst hard working members of the population, and then produce weasel words when some of their players frequently involve themselves in salacious activities whilst pouring away money like water. To make matters even worse, such behaviour is almost condoned by Gordon Taylor and the P.F.A. who in my estimation are far too ready to defend the indefensible. So right wing prejudice? I think not.

so where does the disgusting right wing bit kick in? wheres the link between highly paid footy stars acting badly and racist bnp type policies? on the events of what happened in spain almost every paper has reported the story in a similar vein?

Right- I take your point- and I'm in no way condoning the behaviour of these players. Perhaps I've jumped the gun a bit and taken what this Simon Heffer says as "typical" of that particular paper. They're quick to condemn Football itself- rather than the individuals- and the language is typical; it's a "pernicious habit" and an "unpleasant pastime." This man has not confined his comments to condemnation of the behaviour of these players; he is seeking to "label" Football. I take your point that it WOULD be a good idea if the Clubs were forced to clean up their act. But what I objected to was the way he's made that incident an excuse to tarnish the name of, not only Football but, by implication, all those who follow it and enjoy it. That means us. I am NOT left-wing- in fact, I don't know which party I would vote for now. I'd tend to vote for a person rather than a party, if anyone emerged with intregrity and sensible balanced views; someone who wanted to serve the country, I'd vote for them. Such people are rare, it seems - they all seem to be on a power-trip- and an ego-trip. It is because I know I'm inclined to get excitable- and "take off" and could write a reply that was emotionally charged and not well thought out that I it to you lads, first!!! Maybe I did use exaggerated language- but I do know The Daily Mail tends to whip up bad feelings towards people who are "not like them." So, I value your thoughts and judgements, O.K?!!!

looking at some photos in the paper today i saw the alleged victims and the accused getting very friendly together on the dance floor, its seems similar to the chelsea incident last year which was thrown out, at the moment we have only heard one side of the story so ill reserve my judgment for later on this one?

Taking the Spanish incident aside for a moment, IMHO the Daily Mail is possibly the worst paper in existence. Whilst disliking the tabloids for their dumbing down of absolutely everything, the Mail and also the Express to a certain extent are just plain liars. Right wing, royal loving xenophobic w*****s seem to write for them. Whilst pretending to be a cut above the tabloids they love salacious gossip just as much and whilst they seem quite happy to slag off football and all its followers and general idiosyncracies (or in the case of a lot of players idiotsyncracies) they still have a large footballing section in the back as they realise they cannot cope without the sales that it brings. Ooh it fair makes my blood boil
