What kind of facilities would you like to see at Oteley Road?
None at all. It is a Greenfield site
Do you agree that the increased sport/leisure
Facilities, would more than make up for the covenant on the GM?
No, because they are in the wrong area. The Meole area has more facilities than other areas of the borough that have very little and should therefore be a priority over Meole.
The covenant was put on the Gay Meadow because the land was sold to the club way below market value. The covenant is there to ensure the tax payers of Shrewsbury could get a fair return of the increased value of the land.
Do you agree the GM is the perfect site for the theatre?
No. The flood issues would be a major consideration because as a new build the regulations would demand flood alleviation and that has not been properly priced in any of the proposals including those to be debated next week. Guesses are not good enough when dealing with public money. The lagoons required would take up a lot of the land and reduce the facilities that many claim are possible there.
Do you wish STFC to close?
No.
Do you want STFC to regain and secure league status?
Yes.
Do you feel as an increasing amount of other Shrewsbury Town Residents do that Telford is now considered to be the Capital of Shropshire, for shopping, entertainment and jobs and business, and that Shrewsbury has now been lumbered with the name Retirement Capital of Shropshire?
No.
Dear Mrs Philips,
I am sorry that the club owners are not working for what is possible and are being economical with the truth much of the time. The councillors want to help, as was shown with the granting of planning permission on a Greenfield site, but the club are asking too much from the public purse.
The football club should be looking at the land near the new cattle market. It solves all but one of the current objections. I will still oppose the use of public money to subsidise a private business. Yes, the club could be good for the local economy but private businesses must make their own way financially. If the council were to give me a couple of million pounds to subsidise my business I know I would be employing over 250 people but I know I have to find the finance myself. As it is I can only dream of expansion until I can find the finance.
Unfortunately, the Gay Meadow option for the theatre will cost more money than is available and it would be criminal of the council to start a project that would drain our finances before it was completed whilst taking money from many projects already in the pipeline.
It is a shame that the people running the club are intent on making money instead of achieving what is possible for the way ahead. If they had the will the council would help but without taxpayers financing the scheme.
