The SlopyShire Star - Sunday, 18 April 2004 30p
It’s the day after the big game where the Veterans sneaked a victory by the smallest of margins in a dramatic penalty shoot out. But what did we learn about the future of the two football clubs and can they even attempt to challenge the ASFC again.
Penatlys – There”four” Vetrans Win!!!!
As the press turned up to the game the teams were out and training – the early Under 20’s looked nothing short of ragged and mant local fans were pointing out that the veterans were taking a considerable hight advantage into the game. The assembled median and fans were all in agreement that it would be the vets to win. After about 10mins of training it was game on.
Due to a kid mix up the Vets had to play the first 10 minutes missing influential defender Gal who was eventually brought into the game, During this time the game started very different to pre match expectations with the under 20’s using the extra space well. Long shots from Murrey , Thomas and Macklin all tested the keeper Downward room range but the much improved keeper stood strong for them all. For this period the Vetrans were restricted to breakaways with Jp and Digger Dave putting in the Hard graft and running up front. But after the teams reverted to 11 a side the Veterans begin to get more into the game and this led to the days first goal. A long ball from Midfield (possibly Williams) was misjudged by the centerback pairing of Stu_P and Joey and Matt Kendrick Stole in behind the back line. His first shot was saved well by the captain Ty Marshall but Kendrick followed up to cheekily back heel the ball in the back of the net from 5 yards out. The Vets celebrated and celebrated well and refocused on adding to the lead. Back the Under 20’s came with some good work down the flanks from Rob and Murrey again leading to a few chances for the midfield pushing up. But it was again the vets that found the finish, and what a finish. Good work down the right wing found Paul Williams free and clear of the defence and instead of looking to cross the ball he tried to powerfully drive the ball home from 20 yards. The keeper was deceived by the flight of the ball and the vets a 2 goal lead. Unfortunately this was the last of the action that he buy Paul Williams would see as a hamstring injury forced him of 20 minutes and Stu Dunn was given a surprise run out. Many of the Veterans must have believed that Christmas had some early but this game was far from over!!!
After dominating much of this early game with no reward the Under 20’s stepped it up a gear with Macklin and Thomas starting to control the game, and it was macklin who breathed new life into the game. The ball broke free and macklin moved onto it about 30 yards out and hit a thunderous shot past downward who did not see it, a wonderful strike deserving of goal of the mach. As the game moved closer to half time the vet began to sit back and invite the pressure on to them and with 5 minutes to go until Half time a high ball into the box was adjudge to have been handled by a veterans player and the ref awarded a peno. Penalty taker for the team Murrey stepped up and coolly struck it hard and straight and reasonably unstoppable. There was still time for the vets to have a few chances and the Under 20;s to have a goal ruled out for Rob pushing in the box when he scored his header, and Gallon to clear off the line from a fagin Shot.
HT 2-2
The second half was one in the early part of Under 20’s domination, and more silly defending by the Vets. Another peno was given when After one attack downward had come out of goal and got beaten, Thomas shot but Wrighty on the line hand balled it over the bar. Booked for the incident (the only one of the game) Murrey stepped up to Score another well take set piece. The second half show by Murray was good and he could well have had more than the eventually hatrick he scored, missing another 3 very good chances. But his hatrick did come as rob played well down the wind drwing the defender out and then playing in Murrey past the last man which was rewarded with a sweet finish, which Murrey well. At 4-2 and dominating the game again there seemed only one winner. Shouts for another pelaty for the under 20s were waved away and the linesmen came in for some stick second half, but the vets got a grip of the game back the height advantage finally paid off and Stu Dun scored a close range header being his marker Joey. Joey himself almost scored goal of the day after picking up the ball in the defence he beat the whole of the midfield and the defence of the Vets on a mazy run and blasted just over the bar. The second half also saw good work from the busy Afro who put in very committed and solid performance, never really being troubled. Digger Dave and Jp were sitill working hard up front and Kendrick, Hamerhill, Plimmer and Dunn laid a few chances on for the front two. A Dunn through ball released Digger Dave and he was one on one with the keeper but Bravery from Ty prevented the goal. The vets defence had also tightened up with Jamo breaking up lots of attacks and Wrighty and Gallon back on form after earlier slips.
To try and stop the comeback manager Peter Jones tried a double substitution with Anslow (TOAO) replacing the disappointingly hangover fagin and Hannah Phillips replacing the manager himself. It looked to be working as Anslow in the first 3 mins on the pitch floored Wrighty and had 2 decent chances, but with minutes to go the vets got that all important equaliser that will be remembered for eons to come. After a scramble in the box it was Kendrick who added his second of the day and the match to a dramatic Peno shoot out
FT – 4-4
Penaltys
With veterans Scoreing there forst 5 penaltys through, Gallon, Williams, Digger Dave, JP and Wrighty)(I think) and the under 20’s scoring 4 through (Murrey, Stu_P, Macklin and Joey) the pressue felt to experienced man Ant Thomas who hit a strong peon right central which downward read and saved well, which won the game for the Vets
But it was a entertaining game played ina good spirit which agasin only increased the reputation of the B and A community
Man of the Match
1) Macklin – Wonder Goal and ran the midfield with a good first touch and clever passing ability
2) Murrey – A hatrick – and all round committed good play
3) Kendrick – 2 well taken goals and the vets stand out player
Honourable mentions to Ant, Afro, Digger Dave, Pete Downward, Jamo, Stu_P and Joey all played very well.
(there are proabley a lot of mistakes in this - but i had a go)
