Interesting point in todays Shropshire Star which seems to indicate that the board may be starting to think they may be needing to reduce their costs for next season.
Apparently after a recent board meeting it was decided that they'd delay contract talks with Lowe (who's out of contract in the summer) until "we know where we are going to be".
This could be an important point indicating what position we will be in next season if we remain in the conference. Does this means the board gambled on this season by putting extra cash up for a big push to get back into the league? If they are starting to be cautious over whether we retain Lowe next season then I guess they are starting to look at the size of the squad STFC can sustain for more than one season in the Conference.
Not surprising really and has to be the sensible approach. However, if we don't make it and this indicates there is less cash/less players next season then it'll be even tougher going next year.....

You also have to ask if Lowe is on the chopping block for financial reasons are we stuck with some of Quinns bad choices on two year contracts whom we'd be better of without.

Boo hoo ryan lowe might be leaving in the summer - what a shame - in fairness we have enought options up front now so he is not needed, so there is no reason to offer him a new deal really - any way of he is off good luck to the kid - you never know someone might remember tht he is a forward and actually play him there!

It'll be very interesting to see what else came out of last weeks board meeting.
There's no doubt JQ hasn't been particularly careful with the money splashed about so far.
Darby, Street, Bell, Drysdale, G Tolley (wages for little reward) + ending various contracts - have we spent beyond our means?
Time will tell.

I think the Board are right to exercise some caution. Being realistic now about this season, the play-offs look most likely (although we'll still need to improve a bit to make sure of that), but once in the play-offs it's a lottery and the best team doesn't necessarily win - so we might be alright!! But I think most of the frustration that people have shown on here recently over our performances is exactly because of the point you raise - this year is our best shot at getting back because we have the players and the money. If we don't, attendances and money will dwindle next year making it harder, and heaven forbid if we're still here in 2 or 3 years time we'll be playing in front of 1500 and unable to attract the better players.

Remember that Ryan Lowe is still on a football league contract. He signed it when we were in division three.

I'd suggest that Howie, Darby, Tinson, O'Connor, Cramb are also on 'Football LEague' contracts though Ant?

I'd imagine they are, but Howie, Tinson and O'Connor are all the backbone to the side. Ryan Lowe isn't.

Yep, see your point Ant, and certainly Lowe’s position will hinge almost entirely on two things:
a) We go up - he probably stays b) Luke leaves – the only pace of any type we have left up front and has a chance of a one year contract.
What I was trying to point out is how the 2 year contracts of the likes of O Connor and Darby has tied the hands of the board when it comes to re-negotiating the contracts of the fringe players.
Personally, I think Lowe will leave in May and go and score goals for someone in Division 3.

If we released Lowe I am uncertain he would get a contract in Div 3, not if Leon / Murray and Bavo are anything to go by

Bavo has a chance of getting taken on by Wrexham though and didn't Drysdale have offers from League clubs?
Very hard for clubs to take on players mid-season even if they like them, as we showed with Potter.

Have to say taking into account everything, Ryan lowe has done very well at Shrewsbury. He is a striker, who plays in midfield, but yet still scores 10 odd goals a season. These sorts of players are very important.
Yes he is inconsistant but the fact he can and has played upfront, at right/left midfield and in central midfield shows how versitile he is. He also a player who can and has changed games before.
I'd also venture that cramb and Aiston are on league contracts too.

Who says he's on lots of money? We plucked him from Burscugh (sp???). Its not as if he dropped 4 divisions to play here.

I agree that the finance is the likely scenario as to why they're waiting to see whether to offer him another contract. The other could be that if we go up, JQ doesn't rate him enough for Div 3, and wouldn't want him anyway, but would keep him for the Conf?

I doubt Lowe is on that much and i wouldn't have thought Tinson would be on too high a wage as Macclesfield only pay peanuts,we could have doubled his money and he still wouldn't be on as much as some others in the squad.
Lowe probably deserves a contract but i'm not sure whether JQ rates him that highly. He certainly doesn't figure in his plans as a forward and isn't always a starter on the right.
