An interesting article from todays racing post:-
PADDY POWER boss John O’Reilly on Wednesday hit out at the criminal gang disrupting online betting and demanding "blackmail" payments, describing their tactics as “racketeering and extortion“. The Irish company’s chief executive was speaking at a Dublin press conference called to report on the firm’s record results for last year. O’Reilly said: “These activities started in America and have been going on for over a year. We first had an attack just over a month ago and they were demanding payment indollars from us. “These people have the ability to stop not just internet betting but even an airline like Ryanair. It’s racketeering and extortion, and responsibility for stopping it rests with the ISPs (internet service providers).” O’Reilly was reluctant to say just how much had been demanded but said: “These people say give us $10,000 to $50,000 and we will go away but if you pay up they will be back next month for more.” A number of other on-line betting firms have also been hit including Corals and Blue Square. The gangs bombard the websites with requests for information so that those wanting to place bets cannot get on. However finance director Ross Ivers was adamant that there is no threat to the company’s main computer system. Hesaid: “This is not hacking - there has been no attempt to steal data. It’s blocking and it’s akin to putting 400 people inside a betting shop to block anyone else coming in.”
