most important is to gat a camera with an OPTICAL ZOOM. If you buy one with a digital zoom you will be disappointed. Digital zoom cameras just take the centre of the image and magnify it causing grainy pictures. If you go for a 2x optical zoom with the highest pixel rating you can afford, say 2 megapixel you should be ok. Do a search on GOOGLE type BUY DIGITAL CAMERAS UK then you can search the lists of dealers. OPTICAL ZOOM OPTICAL ZOOM remember.Dont be persuaded otherwise. also go for a decent make eg Olympus, fuji sony etc. Buy WHAT CAMERA or an equivelent. At the back is a section reviewing the latest cameras, and they give ster ratings.Go for the best OPTICAL ZOOM CAMERA THEY RATE HIGHLY in your price range, then search the internet for your chosen camera at the best price. try PIXMANIA - Thats where i got mine. best of luck. Now have I forgotten anything - ah! yes OPTICAL ZOOOOOOMMM!!!!!

my mum just got one
best i could see was
canon a300 £150 (same make as mine but lower spec) 128 memory £30 (you only get 8meg with it) card reader £10 (saves hassle) rechargables £10
i'm sure you could get all that or the equivelent for £150 if you search hard enough

128 Memory means you can store more pictures on your camera than what the basic camera memory can store.

Check ebay if it's not for serious use!

I can recomend Pixmani too, great savings on all major brands, the only downside is that the instructions are nearly always in French. Ordered on the internet, arrived DHL in 2 days.

With that kind of budget, and i'm not being rude pop along to your nearest Jessops where they will have some trade in cams for the price you want to pay with a minimum 12 month guarantee with better features than that if you bought brand new.

a card reader is a simple and quick way of transferring the pics you have taken to your pc (and saves on batteries if you don't opt for rechargables)
forget the digital zoom, it doesn't do anything software can later do
the 128meg card is extra storage whichever camera you opt for will more than likely come with a card that hold about a dozen or so full quality pics
a bigger memory card will allow more pics to be stored on the camera (eg if you are away on holiday, how many pics are you likely to want to take?)
(my camera is a canon powershot s50) 5 mega pixels and 3x zoom
at full zoom and quality you can just about recognize a person sitting/standing on the opposite side of the footy pitch

With the card readers your computer needs to be Windows 98SE or later.
I had the same knowledge of digital cameras as you, until a few weeks ago. I bought a 4 mega pixel camera in Dixons that was reduced from £250 to £125.
Paid £40 for the 128mb card, means I can take nearly 100 pictures at top quailty. Can't believe how easy it is to use. You should be able to pick up a bargain somewhere.
People say 2 mega pixels is good enough but I really notice the difference with the higher quality pictures.

it depends what you require the camera for
my mums canon a300 is good value for the money, its only bad point in my opinion is that it is a bit plasticy (if there is such a word)
memory cards can be bought later
just one thing to beware of some camera take those expensive small batteries
check what batteries they use and the price of them

seems ok
a card reader will be more like £25 for that one as it has a new type of memory card (xd) but the price will come down as it gets more popular

Good quality rechargable batteries are a sound investment. The ones that came with my camera were used up after about 4 photos

Tis true. Pilch a photo of the riverside from the back of the stands on Saturday and using the zoom feature we could spot various people in the terrace we know. Tis good that. Saw that Ant, and even hiding behind son and his mate could still be seen OK you can all have a laugh now if you like. I bought a basic digicam from Aldi for £100 a year ago +£15 for 128mb card. Came with all the wires, batts and charger. Been very pleased with it and for what I do more that handy. If and when it packs in or I decide to upgrade I will probably go for a better model. Alot depends on how serious you are on the subject, someone like me taking basic snaps cannot justify spending huge amounts.
