Basically there's a rule (I'm too tired to work it out) which means the sum you have to do will always equal one of a fair few numbers on there. If you notice, the symbols change each time. It's kinda hard to explain.

There's only a certain number of answers available from the rule - these all have the same symbol hence the mystic ball is always right.

It doesn't matter which two numbers you add up and subtract from the original number - the answer is always divisible by 9. All the numbers on the board that are divisible by 9 have the same sybol

12-3 =9 13-4=9 14-5=9
(The main figure goes up by one but the minus figure would always increase by one hence making the same answer)
21-3=18 22-4=18
32-5=27
Every answer is a multiple of 9 therefore all symbols are the same.
