I'm just old enough to have seen him play once, the man was an awesome presence and was one of those very rare players who was respected by all fans.
RIP

Just got in touch with my Dad in India, his all time No 1 player.
He was gutted, guess you have to be of a certain age.

My mother has a Photo of me when I was about 12 with a stack of John Charles Welsh caps piled on top of my head. It was taken at Myrthr Tydfil Football Club. Tho' I don't remember him playing football, my father assured me the guy was a pure gentleman and a brilliant player. RIP John Charles

He was obviously a great talent of his day, but more than that you get the impression that he was universally respected by all in the game during his playing career. But why we would have a minutes silence for him at Gay meadow when he has no association with our club or country is somewhat beyond me. R.I.P.

A true great of the game, a term that is much over used these days but one that certainly applies in this case, a sad loss

All clubs should have a minute's silence for him. TBH, I believe that the main Italian rivalry is actually Inter Milan/Juve, in a similar way to the Man U/Liverpool rivalry being stronger than the Merseyside or Manchester derby.

But why, Did we have a minutes silence for Jim Baxter or Stanley mathews?, No .. Those clubs that are associated with his playing career should mark the occasion accordingly, every other footie fan will pay their respects in private if thats what they feel the need to do. Don't forget that to alarge majority of today's match going fans he's just a name,.. harsh but true.

That's a fair enough view but I certainly would have held a minute's silence for Stanley Matthews.
I often criticise the amount of silences (the Soham murders for instance, and even September 11) at football matches, but think that it can be an excellent touch in cases such as these.
But again, I do respect and understand your view.
