On the 2nd of Feb I sent 75 e-mails to all the County and Borough councilors, I sent to both as some county Cllr's have expressed some opinions about NM and GM, out of the 75 I got 24 replies, I gave them until the 10/02/04 to reply, here are quotes from thier replies, sorry its a long list, I will not publish names, but with some help, hopfully from members of this board I would like to put together everything we have and send it to Paul Marston, he sems quite good with the press these days.
I really don't think that the Gm was turned down on price, its politics gone mad!!
Sorry it goes on a lot and the spelling mistakes are as they appeared on thier e-mails.
“I am not on the Planning Commitee so my views are my own.
I do not support STFC's move to Oteley Road for two Main reasons.
Firstly, I object on planning grounds, on the basis that this area should
have remained in the foreseeable future as Open Green space.
Secondly, I do not believe it is right for the Tax payer to help to finance
a scheme which in the end may not solve problems for what is a private
enterprise. There are many businesses in Shrewsbury that would like to
receive this sort of favour.”
“Thank you for the questionnaire I have always been in favour of facilitating the Town's move to a new site.I believe that the development at Otley Road would benefit the whole town not just the Club.I believe that we are being eclipsed by the strong leadership that Telford has, they have a vision that is actually put into action to deliver a better standard of life for it's citizens.I wholly support the provision of a new entertainment venue to replace the out-dated,unsuitable and unsavable Music Hall.”
“I fully agree with most of your sentiments but not at the price the developers ( ALASKA) are asking, from start to finish the whole project would cost the council something in the region of £60 Million, I and other councilors who have to date voted against the offer are not against the idea in principal but not at that cost, we want the best value for your money,
When buying something personally, I am sure you don't pay over the odds,ie: You don't pay £20,000 for a £15,000 car, I do my best to consider council money, Your Money in the same manner.
I only hope those who are trying to take a financial and political advantage of the situation
would stop and give some thought to the reality of the situation, then perhaps we could
all achieve our goal, I don't know but we may find that we are all after the same.
Good Luck in your quest”
“I support the concept of a theatre in shrewsbury but the financial circumstances must be more sensible to proceed.I f the borough council are expected to provide several million pounds in subsidy for a new stadium then I believe it reasonable that any new facilities should be a joint venture for the benefit of the town. However, the directors of shrewsbury town are not prepared to do this and you should ask the question why not”
”I believe that the majority of councillors, on the council, support the move of the football club to Oteley Rd (that is why planning permission was given).
However, the problem is over the finances in regard of the purchase of the GM site, the purchase of the 52 acres at Oteley Rd and the associated car parking, all weather pitches etc.
The District Valuer has given the council valuations on both sites, these fall way short of the 14 million requested by the football club.
I will give you some hypothetical figures. if the GM is worth 7 million, OR 2 million and the car parking etc is 1 Million, total 10 million pounds. How can the council be expected to pay 14 million.
By paying the figures I have quoted (total 10 million) this is with a total disregard of the covenant of the GM and we have a duty and reponsibility to ensure we spending rate payers money wisely.
I repeat I support the GM move, but the football club must be realistic in its approach and explain the full financial situation including total building costs, grants etc.”
“Many thanks for your help and support, and I wish more people would stand up and be counted, and not hide behind their policial party. Councillor Armstrong proposed and Councillor seconded at the September 22nd 2003 FULL COUNCIL MEETING, " The S.A.B.C. but the Gay Meadow." Now they have turned tail. WHY?
Borough Elections take place on June 10th. need I say more?”
“I have at times been a season ticket holder at the Meadow and have attended thousands of matches.
I strongly support the concept of a theatre or new entertainment centre in Shrewsbury but the financial circumstances must be such that it is sensble to proceed with the project. The same conditions apply to the building of a new football stadium. If the borough council are expected to provide several million pounds in subsidy for a new stadium then I think it reasonable that any new facilities should be a joint venture for the benefit of the people of the town. Presently the directors of the club are not prepared to do this”.
“My veiws about the possibility of doing a deal with STFC are on public record. I will not suport any deal that is clearly a poor deal. If STFC were realy commited to have a new ground they would talk about our offer to build a stadium and then they could be a tennet not just us the council giving them 14 Million. As for the NEV this like the OMH is very near to my heart but I will not put in place any plans that will leave the Music Hall with no future”
I think we could have some help from one or two county Cllrs if we want it.
