...but do supporters care, or is our only concern that we get the player we want to bring success? Very interesting piece on the BBC website regarding agents in football... news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/3444871.stmIf anyone's interested in this side of the game I can really recommend a book called 'Broken Dreams: Vanity, greed and the souring of British football' by Tom Bower. Goes into detail regarding El Tel and his antics at Spurs, George Graham at Arsenal, Cloughie at the Forest...talks about lack of any regulations and investigation into the games finances. Each and every Premiership chairman moans about agents and yet each seems to be prepared to deal with them...it's very much an old boys network who are all very reluctant to allow anyone to interfere or investigate the way they do business... For example, seems that when a players transfer goes to a tribunal it's the wages that the buying club are prepared to pay (which must be stated) which determine the price the club would have to pay for the player. Its alleged that on at least a couple of occasions Spurs simply stated a lower wage (than the true value to be paid) and thus lowered the transfer fee paid to the selling club...the player however, got the full wage through other means (cash, house, car etc.). I wonder how many other clubs have employed these methods and so seeing the selling clubs transfer income reduced? It's a very shady business by the looks of things...bit of an eye opener...

Agents have and are continuing to ruin the game in my opinion
The worst thing about the way business is now conducted are the huge amounts of money that no longer stay within the game as a result of agents being involved

Your not wrong Prof our kid, there is vast amounts of money which are lost in transit from one club to another...as agents are the intermediates they are able to take a slice of the transfer without either club knowing anything about it...

Bit of an eye opener but is anyone that surprised that's it happening?
It'll be interesting if Man Utd have to reveal all of their transfer dealings etc. like is being suggested at the moment. Hopefully it could lead to more transparency alround.

To a lesser extent Chesterfield did over Chester when signing Luke Becket. It went to a tribunal and Chesterfield deliberatly declared that his wages were going to be X, thus they got him on the cheap, however when the FA went in later on that season, it transpired that Luke and a number of other players were being paid slightly more than they were legally supposed to be recieving through their contracts.
The only thing about the book that might have made it slightly better, would have been if he'd looked further down the football league pyramid, as I suspect he might have got slightly further in his ivestigations.
Still doesnt detract from it being a must read for anyone interested in football.
