This is off-topic- but we've got some very knowledgable peoplel on this board. I want to collect anecdotal evidence towards a book I really hope to write when I've stopped working- or cut down my hours to a minimum. It's on the subject of teaching methods for reading/writing. I've got lots of scribbled notes - I write things down everytime I notice anything. But I need some input from parents and young people themselves, who were taught from the late 80's to today. The thing I'm most worried about is "emergent spelling" as a valid teaching method. Also encouraging "guessing" too much in reading. My theory is that, whilst bright students survive and flourish anyway- even average students are being disadvantaged- and it's Special Needs teachers, like me, who are picking up the pieces. Half the pupils are really of average intelligence, I reckon. It worries me so much, I really want to do something about it.
My daughter and I were going to start a website (she's got more IT skill than I have.) It's "under construction" (wise-owl-reading.co.uk.) But it's hard with her living in Shropshire and me here. I could have invented people to contact us, I suppose.
I've done interviews for my M.Ed dissertation- but that was such a small sample. I need as much input as possible - from a wide area.
I know this is a "Wiggyism"- goes on a bit and off-topic. But it's not silly- it's important to young peoples' futures.
We've got parents and young people- and students at Uni, on this site. (If you're at Uni- then you've "survived" the system- or been to a school with good solid teaching.) If anyone has any ideas- reply to me via the board- or you can contact through e-mailing "wise-owl-reading", actually- it does work though it's not up and running as a website, yet.
