You know the TUT TUT one that JP started and it absolutely off- about 6 pages- about those pre-teen underage girls from one family having babies.
Well- there was a discussion on the radio, I think it was Thursday morning.
They had a girl on from the Youth Council of Great Britain or whatever it is.
She said in effect that young people won't buy into any "just say "No" campaign because it's not seen as "cool" for young teenagers NOT to have sex.
How SAD!!
I think it's sad first of all because of the consequences, and also because it's become a THING people HAVE- a sort of self-gratification thing, it's nothing to do with real relationships at all- it reduces men and women, girls and lads, to pleasure- giving machines, not people.
Surely, surely, it should be about relationships? Personally I don't even like that current expression, "Having sex." "It's almost like - oh, "Have a Drink" "Have a Meal"- and then "Have Sex" It reduces people to the level of commoditities.
Drinks and Meals are things to be consumed, they are not about people-but about inannimate things to be consumed- so why refer to sex, which is about men and women, in the same way?
I'm not saying all our generation didn't make mistakes. Some didn't. But a lot of us did. But in those days, you paid for it, either emotionally, or in a real practical sense. And it was well -known even then that girls from loving and supportive homes that sent them into the world with a sense of self-worth and a high self-esteem, were less likely to be influenced by any peer-pressure.
I tend to think that woman and girls are the same as they ever were- they invest more in relationships. They often "mis-read" the signals and think men care about them more than they do, and they get hurt more.
But even lads sometimes get hurt, they just don't talk about it the same.
There was a lot of people who said a lot of sensible things, JP said it was parents (But what if they're so thick they are just "educated" by media hype? I know people like that. They say things like, "They're all doing it!"
Meole Shrew said it was about relationships and talking to kids- that's VERY true.
TBH said that lives get wrecked because of the consequences of all this, including the after-effects of abortion. That's right- I know of a young MARRIED woman who had an abortion on medical grounds and still suffers intermittant depression because of it.
Ema said that many kids think it's fashionable to have babies, because of the pubilicity people like Jordan get.
I often think it all went wrong when sex became "a commodity" and a commercial proposition like food and drink and clothes..etc.. The next thing is it gets separated from real people and real feelings.
We've really lost something valuable here. There's a lot of "using" going on, by both men and women.
You get young girls wanting babies to be fashionable or get money and their own house. You get lads just wanting sex and then if things go wrong, wanting a girl to get rid of the consequences.
Yet deep down, people do have real feelings and are capable of caring - they're just maybe in denial about it, I don't know- because it's so important to be "cool!"
