My youngest grandson has the strongest Shropshire accent of all of us. Like me, he's the only one actually born in Shropshire- and unlike me, who was born in Wellington- he's a true-shrew- born in Shrewsbury. He says "Roight!!" It's a funny thing but the accents different in different areas of Shropshire. My father was Welsh- but lived in the Oswestry area- he sounded a bit Welsh. A lot of Market Drayton people had a slight North Staffs (potteries) accent- it's so near the border. But, even when I was at school- I remember people coming from the villages- like Winstanswick- and saying,"Roight!" In fact, one of my friends lived on a farm and had a cat called "Soidways" (because it always ran sideways!) Some say I've picked up a scouse accent (please,no!) but round here, they know I'm a "foreigner". I've been accused of having a "West-Midlands accent". I love accents!

The two easiest to spot are Shrewsbury and Dawley. A true Dawley accent is unmistakable, you can even detect which part of the town they are from.

PPP I expect better from you owd lad! The accents you refer to are those brought in from outside the area. True folk from Wellington, Dawley, Madeley etc have great local dialect. Must'na grumble jockey lad thee knowst!!

Thanks for that link, Prof. I had to laugh when I read about "all around the Wrekin!" My mother and father came to live near us when the children were small- because they were their only grandchildren. I remember my mother saying to someone round here- "and he went all around the Wrekin to get there!" This person just stood there, looking at her with a blank expression!

Being from North Shropshire and not far from Drayton my accent has been mistaken as northern or north staffs, but then again when i've visted my sister in milton Keyes(God awful place) my accent has been mistaken as welsh. Its difficult to decribe the shropshire accent cos it varies so much, cos u have the rural, south cheshire, potteries, Brummy and Mid wales element. Are we all messed up

Recently I've been told I sound like Michael Owen. I don't consider myself to have an accent

Ant...you do sound like Michael Owen...!!!!! ;D Pity you canna play footie like him Talking of accents most people in Salop think I sound like some Cockney geezer, especially Phil T!!!!. Suppose its what happens after 7 years of mixing with the southern shandy drinkers..........it will happen to you as well in time Ant, so don't worry about sounding like Mr Owen for too long. Everyone down here though reckons I sound Welsh....cant bl**dy win!!!!
