From the perspective of an exile in pie-eater land, Shropshire looks like the promised land. I'd love to go back - and my eldest daughter would love it if we sold up and moved back to my roots. But they are MY roots- not Mr Wiggy's! Shrewsbury looks great to me- all the advantages of a town, and a town with character and beauty- but with beautiful countryside around. But then, at 21, I wanted to taste the exciting life that Liverpool offered in the 1960s. And was it so great? Yes and no! People moaned about The Blue Angel and other Liverpool Clubs just as much as they probably moan about Liquid or whatever, now. Good times- and not so good times depend on people, and relationships. It's the same. The grass is always greener. Only it really IS greener in Shropshire, literally! There were some exciting things happening in Liverpool, yes- but that was because the young people did things- from forming their own bands- to satire and poetry-type stuff in dimly lit basements (and not all that many of them achieved fame outside their own circle) It's people that make things happen. I've always thought that what Shrewsbury needs is for the young people to get together and make things happen. There's never purpose-made venues, built to order. People decide to do things- then find their own venue- however unpromising it seems at first. But, then, I suppose, there wasn't a lot of nimbys or a nimby-sympathising council ready to pounce on young peoples' ventures- and stop them! But, if it was left to me- I'd go back- of course I would. (And buy a seson ticket !!!)

I've moved to London for uni and have been here for 2 and a half years now. I love it, the bright lights, the culture - it's fantastic. People moan about the transport but it's still be far the best transport system in Britain.
At the moment Shrewsbury is too small for me, too quiet and seems to be run by old, quiet people who don't want to take a chance on anything. There is a lack of jobs, nothing to attract me back. If I want to fulfil my potential, I feel like I just wouldn't be able to do it back in Shrewsbury.

In my 20s no I definitely didn't want to go back as the big cities offered far more and were far more exciting places to be, but as i've got older it's become more and more attractive.
I'd love to go back and live in Shrewsbury but lack of suitable employers in the County is a major stumbling block in being able to do so.

There are plenty of employers in Telford, you could always work in Telford and live in Shrewsbury like many Salopians do.
Then again I suppose the average employer in Telford is mostly of the industrial variety.....

I have to change at Wolves station on the way back to london from Shrewsbury. No offence to anyone who lives there but it's one of the only places I've been to that doesn't look nice on a sunny day

I work in IT TBH, there's occasionally something in Telford like the Inland Revenue for example but they're pretty few and far between
I've done the commuting thing before and don't really fancy it any more to be honest

EDS just lost their contract with the IR so all those telford job will switch to Cap Gemini, the hope is once Cap Gem get settled they'll bring other business units alongside the IR project
Keep an eye out for some decent I.T. posts if that happens
do you do systems / networks / consumer?
the massive factories like NEC and Ricoh have incredible I.T infrastructure, and are often recruiting via specialist agencies

Cheers TBH
I work in Systems, technical support/architecture in enterprise scale environments
I'd heard about the Cap Gemini thing and i'm keeping an eye on that one
I get the industry press, like 'Computer Weekly' and 'Computing' plus I look on the jobserve website
I haven't seen much in Telford over the years to be honest , but i'll keep looking

This is an interesting one for me. I first came to Shropshire when I was 19 as a student, got into debt at college (£257, lot of money in those days) stayed around as I had met a girl and found a job to pay off the debt. Married the girl, 25 years this March and just kept working. I love the place, Shrewsbury and the surrounding countryside. But I can see the limitations on the place and why some have had to leave to find work.

there are I.T. agencies in Telford which will make you aware of jobs
my mate got into EDS via one and a couple of years later he's doing seriously well for himself
hope you have some success and come back to "The Homeland" soon!

Im only young (21) and would fancy getting out of Shrewsbury having lived here for my life. I think its an ideal place to grow up (traditional little market town, easy acces to most areas, nice mixture of urban and rural areas, low crime rate, plenty of pubs ) but I do fancy broadening my horizons. I just remember an old boss telling me "the grass isn't always greener on the other side" I do know however plenty of people who have come to Shrewsbury from big cities and fallen in with love with the place but I plenty of people my age in the town want to leave as its the not the most exciting of places and there there is few opportunities. Hopefully the Tories get voted out and some of the devolopments get past the press release of an idea in the Star stage ;D. Personally I think its a good place to grow up and then grow old......... just the shame about the inbetween bits ;D

I left when I was 17 for the usual reasons, too small, no interesting jobs etc. Now I live 20 mins from the centre of a big city and less than 90 mins drive from Shrewsbury - it seems ideal.
Much as I love my home town I have got used to the cultural and other facilities of Manchester and there's no way I'd go back.

I always planed to come back to settle in or around Shrewsbury. I've only been away since 2000 and lived in Burton and Leeds and now i'm stuck on this godforsaken island, ok its maybe nice for a visit but I just feel really claustrophobic and cant wait to leave.
I want to move back to Salop for personal as well as professional reason and i have just applied for a job so everybody fingers crossed

I spent 10 days in California one December, including walks in LA and in the snow covered mountains of the North .
The arrival back in the misty, lush, green Shropshire countryside was the clincher for me, quite fantastic.
Keep it quiet.
It really is the best place.

I think I'll probably be speaking for everyone when I say I really hope you're successful with your job application, Jules. I really can't see that Shrewsbury is badly off for shops, restaurants..etc.. I live, as I've often said, between Pie-Eater Land and Woolly Back Land - Wigan and St Helens. St Helens is most definitely not as good for shopping or eating out as Shrewsbury. Wigan maybe about as good- for shopping, anyway- but not as pretty. There isn't much culture in either place- one theatre in St Helens and The Citadel -where Johnnny Vegas started off- has alternative comedy and arty stuff. The council are TRYING to introduce more culture- they're making a sort of Arty Quarter in what was a run-down area. Wigan just has The Little Theatre- and the Wigan Pier museum complex is good- because they've made it fun for kids. Do you think that Shrewbury could do with a more go-ahead council? (that's an understatement, isn't it?) It's got so much potential. With the right sort of input it could be buzzing with all sorts of creativity. It could have an international reputation and attract all sorts of exciting events. It seems to me, looking at it from the outside- that there's influential people who are blocking developments- and not only on the Foootball front. They seem to have a sort of paranoia about hooligans all round!

Shrewsbury has huge untapped potential but there isn't the drive, imagination or willing amongst the local politicians to make things happen
Shrewsbury should be looking to things like a theatre, university, conference centre etc to increase the Town's status and attract more outside interest and increase the number and diversity of events in the Town
Far more should be done to attract businesses to consider Shrewsbury as their location of choice

Unfortunately you can look back on the record of Shrewsbury, 10, 20, 40 years and not a lot changes.
some s**te buildings are put up.
40 years later they're taken down, and (temporay) car parks put in.
In fairness, in the last 5 years I've seen the most difference in the town centre; removing St austins, the crappy shops by 6th form, having bar med, new flats by st julian friars, etc. we are going the right way!
we just need GM to be sold for housing and the NM built (but with some terraces ;D) for this to be a decent period for Shrewsbury.

The western part of Wolves is nice enough housing wise. The town centre is poor.

Wolverhampton has a theatre and a concert hall Shrewsbury can only dream of
the station is horrible though, get a dodgy connection and wait there an hour, by the time your train comes you are close to hanging yourself

Shrewsbury is a wonderfull place and Ive lived here all my life, couldnt imagine living anywhere else. But that doesnt mean it couldnt be better. The people who run us have a total lack of ambition. For example (and as ive mentioned before)What good is a 700 seater theatre? It would be fine for all your nicey nicey family comics, the smaller orchestras, and local operas, but name me one modern rock or pop band that would get out of bed to perform to 700 people? The trueth is the council dont want them here. They are not interested in the young people. They are not interested in moving things forward, opening up the town. Shrewsbury is summed up by the flower show and thats sad cos it could be so much more.

I hate the place. The only thing that keeps me in shrewsbury are my friends and my football team. I would seriously think about moving away at some point.
The other thing is that I am now in a job that I enjoy and would like to see where it takes me. But as far as lifestyle goes shrewsbury is awful. It is a town clearly geared for the over 60's and when it comes to satisfy the youth of the town there is absolutely no imagination what so ever. I like a lot of people m=in their mid 20's are bored stupid with nights out in shrewsbury and jump at any opportunuty to go somewhere else for a night out.

I left Wem in 1983 to move to Spain with my parents.
I can honestly say the only reason I would move back to Shrewsbury would be to watch the Town play regularly, as my life is not complete without my blue and amber fix. This is why this board is a godsend for exiles like me.
Apart from this I am completely enamoured with the Spanish lifestyle, relaxing, cheap, friendly, great weather, non-violent and NO SPEED CAMERAS ;D

I left to go to university in 1983 and have never been back to live since largely because there are no opportunities work-wise. I remember being desparate to leave when I was 17 and getting away was the best thing I ever did. As much as I love coming back to visit I'm not sure I'd want to live in Shrewsbury. It's too backward looking, lacks the facilities I've got use to living in or close to cities) and seems very insular.

I think Shrew is a lovely place reminds me of Lincoln, York and Chester with lovely scenery, places to visit and nice pubs to drink in (most important). All my fathers relations live there after moving from Leeds as they liked the quiete nature of the town. I myself was born and brought up in Lincoln and as much as I moan about the place I wouldnt change it for the world (no actually would remove the university and all its students). I once toyed with the idea to move to Shrewsbury but decided to stay put (its a long way to travel to sincil bank every other week!!)but still visit regularly and each time find something new to visit or make new friends. Be proud its a lovely place.

I agree Imp (what does that mean at the bottom of your script?) but when you live here and see the lovely scenary every day, it gets taken for granted and doesnt mean a lot, thats Shrewsbury, its like the museums, how many salopians go to them?We have a run down and dull swimming pool, why not turn it into a water park with loads of water features? To say our council are short sighted is like saying the Popes a bit religous. We never get any descent snow here either, flippin tory councilors

A water park? Do you get a lot of heatwaves in Shrews then? Is it the Benidorm of England? (ha ha) Seriously I know what you mean we have a cathedral, castle, roman ruins (not sincil bank), brayford and several parks but I never go for a visit either. The Latin translation is 'may faulty logic undermine your entire philosophy' - apparently
