I dont get it. Just been watchin the news about how the USA have spent a billion + dollars to smash a probe into a comet, apparently to answer questions about the origins of the solar system. But whats the point? I see the reasoning behing the orbiting space stations and stuff, developing new medicines for instance in zero gravity that is just not possible on earth. But this to me seems a total waste of time. With millions of people on this planet starving to death and living in squalor, couldnt they find something a little more constructive to do with the cash? Britain by all accounts still invests billions in the space programme. Does anyone get this? PS, there is jack s**t on tv tonight, so if anyone fancies a row please feel free

Its just a first go at if one of these comets get too close what do we need to do to save our asses, the information will come in rather handy. "how easy would it be to blow one of these son's of b***hes up" (4th July independance day accent etc)

Yea i think Meoleshrew has got it spot on,if when an asteriod gets too close we can now target something from 83 million miles away, but if its a big problem we might need to increase it to 200 million miles as i think that even that is classed in collision terms a near miss!

What if comets are part of an experiment by some superior civilisation? The yanks could have started a space war by attacking a defensless comet.
The yanks are rich enough to pay for this and debt relief. But they also need to be into lowering carbon emmissions so that they can sell the technology - otherwise in 50 years or so they will be a 2nd divisionn nation

Has anybody ever seen the damage a comet or asteroid can cause? I saw in when shoemaker 89 crashed into Jupiter in 1994 the impact was devastating, would have wiped earth out if it hit us instead. Jupiter is 200 times bigger than earth though.
A 1 mile wide space object/comet/asteroid/meteor crashes on our planet 95% of life will die. Thats why we need to see what we can do to divert them or destroy then etc.

Read that the projectile was the size of a washing machine and created a crater the size of 50 football pitches, just hope it doesnt throw the comet off orbit. The Yanks stated "we hit it exactly where we wanted to", presume it had a target on the side so we can all check this out.

who makes teh decision to give this project the green light? who governs/owns rules projects in outer space. space exploration (moon landings satellites) are non intrusive by comparision.

they have probably knocked it off course and eventually it will come round and bite us in the a*s all premiership players wages together would probably pay for the space program

Luke had a go at hitting a comet from the Brittania stadium. Far cheaper than NASA's effort, and probably as successful.

Learn you Physics guys, there is NO chance of moving it 1 mm, and as for blowing it up, with what ?? even the bigest nuke on earth would not destroy it, and then what of all the remaining peices ?
The purpose of this was to discover more of the chemistry of space objects, not to play inter-galactic snooker !!
