I was talking to a Man Utd supporting mate, a few days back, and the conversation got round to the tackle by Roy Keane, which ended the career of Man City's Alf Inge Haaland. Inevitably, this led me to wonder what injuries had occured to Shrews players from bad tackles, fouls etc, and also ones which had been caused by Town players, possibly even accidentally. This is football related, so PLEASE avoid fireworks, night club brawls etc. The older ones amongst you will surely remember Tranmere's George Yardley ending up in hospital, with badly bruised kidneys, after crossing swords with Alf Wood. Also, about 15 years ago, Clive Mendonca had his ear all but severed by the studs of Town's Alan Finley. Then, more recently, in the Ratcliffe era, the Sc***horpe player had his leg broken by a Sam Aiston tackle. On the receiving end, the same Sam Aiston suffered cruciate ligament damage, which kept him out for 5 months, on the opening day of the relegation season 2002/3, after a horrible tackle by an Exeter player. I was there, at Leicester, again on the opening day of the season, in the late 1980s, when Steve Walsh elbowed Town's David Geddis in the closing stages of our 1-0 win, about one minute after Geddis had scored our winner. Geddis suffered a badly broken jaw, and missed about 6 months of the season. Walsh received a 9 match ban. There are probably loads of other instances, which don't immediately spring to mind.

These things are fairly rare. I think you've got them more or less covered there.

Whitters said that Sammy didnt break the scunny players leg.
It was just serious bruising.
Must have been serious bruising as I'm pretty sure the scunny player missed most of the next season...

The Oxford goalie at the Wakeman End - plenty of blood with that one!

Gareth Sheldon was the guy that Sammy crocked in April '01. I was sure he ended up with a broken leg after that "tackle" but perhaps i'm wrong? Last minute of injury time, 2-0 down and Sammy lunged at him in front of the corner flag at the Station End I do believe.
He certainly didn't play again that season, but was back for the first game of the 01/02 season.
I remember the Deano injury against Lincoln in 92/93 as it happened right in front of me. Not a pleasant sight.

A couple of things to bear in mind.
In decades past the game was far more physical in terms of what tackles players could get away with before they were penalised. Many of the 'old school' defenders wouldn't last until halftime these days under current interpretations of the rules.
Players recover quicker these days due to advances in treatment etc.

The Oxford keeper, in March 2002, was Andy Woodman, who has just joined Rushden as goalkeeping coach. He received 48 stitches, mainly in his mouth, which is confirmed in Mike Jones' book, "From Rats to Riches". The injury was not, however, caused directly by a Town player. He collided with an Oxford defender whilst trying to prevent a goal.

Chic Bates clashing heads with the Huddersfield Goalie in the 80/81 FA Cup tie. Keeper went off with a fructured skull.
Martin O'Neill's career was ended by and injury picked up in a tackle playing for Notts County against the Town.

Don't foget Steve (spit) McMahon's two footed lunge at Aussie as we beat Swindon 1-0 away. Aussie was out for several games.

Didn't Dave Mackay get his leg broken in a reserve game at the Meadow ? i think he was on his comeback from a similar injury inflicted elsewhere.

didn't devon white break bobby mimm's jaw a few years back, chasing onto a through ball - and no foul was given. they had to play the rest of the match (which was most of it) with an outfield player in goal and we had about one shot.

I remember Dean Spink breaking Eddie's leg in a game at Crewe (not saying it was his fault) then we signed him when he got fit fit and couldn't get back in Crewe's side.

Adrian Heaths shocking tackle when playing for Burnley in a FA Cup replay at the Meadow is probably the most dirtiest ive ever seen. Could have been the end for Carl that.

Peter Swan went right through the back of Ian Stevens and put him out for months. Not sure of the season, I guess it was when we were in division above as Swan was playing for Burnley I think, or maybe it was Plymouth, which puts it 94-97 date range

Dave Mackay's second broken leg happened at White Hart Lane, and the tackle was made by Peter Dolby. Certainly wouldn't have beel any malicious intent there.

i remember devon white breaking that keeper's jaw. and then i think he went in heavily on his replacement who was down for a few minutes after. That was an odd game - was it against Rotherham? They also had two players sent off after some bad tackles and I think Lee Steele also got sent off. I think we won 2.1 but played badly that day. With Bobby Mimms injury and all the sending off i don't think the game finished until about 5.15. I think the worst challege I've seen was that one by Steve Walsh on Dave Geddis - it really effected our season as Geddis missed a lot of games and I think we ended up getting relegated?

That Rotherham game was odd. Rotherham had 3 sent off, one being the outfield player who took the place of Mimms in goal. Didn't he get a standing ovation from the whole ground? We had one sent off ourselves. It took a penalty to wrap the game up too.

One of the worst I've seen this season was on Ben Smith against Northampton at home, for which one of their players got sent off. I remember him getting up and carrying on with blood dripping down his leg a few inches higher though and he'd have been on the floor for a whole lot longer

A few years back we played Rotherham away on the first day of the season. Tommy Lynch went in very hard on their young right winger resulting in the player nearly ending up amongst the home fans. He didn't get up and had to be stretchered off. Very nasty.

Aiston didn't break Sheldon's leg. The injury was wrongly diagnosed by the Sc***horpe medical staff.
He was back at the start of the following season so actually only missed 3/4 games.

Remember Tommy Lynch getting crocked in the SSC at Bridgnorth one pre season. Their bloke went in very very late and Lynch was carried off in agony.
Must have been a bad tackle as Tommy was out for several weeks at the start of the season - anyone who knew him will know that Lynch played on through injuries.
