indeed.
Good point raised to all those calling it a football club....
Didnt realise Man United had applied to run a casino and a hotel in the offing, so much for being a football club.
Could anyone argue they were really a football club (in the traditional sense of the word that the fans allude too) since the inception of the premier$hite/mid 90s???

Not naivety, my point still applies to most of the football clubs in the premier$hite. But please explain to me, barring the sidetrack that is a football match every so often. What exactly makes clubs like Man United the traditional football club that people talk about? What characteristics remain? How much control and influence do the supporters exert over the club (lets not forget the criminal acts some have resorted to to intimidate certain officials) Barring a few thousand diehards, surely you cant deny that united have been nothing more than a cashcow for the last 15 years??? It's nice of you to pass judgement upon my education, but unfortunatly you dont appear to be very well informed. There is no need to get personal. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate it if i started to make personal comments about your career and education/lack of:

Barring a few thousand diehards, Yep, well said Rob. I saw them, the ones that stayed till the bitter end Tuesday night. All the others could not wait to get home, to Bristol,Cornwall,London, Devon, Oxford, Shrewsbury. Best bit was Fergie clapping at empty plastic seats. 28,000 members of shareholders United, that shows how many care.

Hotel and casino makes sense to me, somewhere for the home fans to stay the night before the match after their long drive, and for the players to "re-invest their salaries in The Club"

Man Utd Chelsea and the rest of the "european elite" are no longer "traditional" football clubs.
Maximising turnover and profits of the business are the most important goals - that's done by having a successful team upon which TV rights and merchandising will thrive. Add ons such as Hotel/Casino put the football club business in the wider entertainment world. More money, more profits etc etc.
Assuming Glazer takes over, there will be an upsurge in Marketing etc, and the customer base will broaden.
The way things will be done in the future will be very different from the way things have been done in the past. We might be seeing the beginning of a major reorganization of European football.
PS - Why does anyone in Shrewsbury wear New York Yankee merchandise? They are the most hated and reviled team with an owner that makes Glazer look like an angel - Marketing?

its just as the same level as a supporters bar that everyone is wishing for at the new meadow Yup, it shows the difference in class of supporter from division 3 to the premier league. Premier league fans prefer to go and have a game of blackjack followed by a couple of spins on the roulette wheel before a game where as us division 3 folk prefer to have a pint in a room that holds 50 people. ;D

The situation that has arisen today puts Manchester United at the centre of the battle for the future of football as a sport in this country. Those 28,000 have families and friends on that basis you have a very viable football club focussed on football and the community it springs from.
What are private individuals doing owning shares in football clubs?
Why was it such a good idea for football clubs to have their shares listed on the stock exchange?
Neither ever made sense. We should be supportive of the supporters organisations on this one.

Well done Sean for putting the whole thing into perspective without resorting to envy, bitterness and just plain hatred as a means of strenghening the argument. Others on here could do worse than take note.
