And I don't mean a 30-something hooligan in Stone Island sweater.
When I was a lad in the dim and distant 80s, the decision to go to the match was often made about luchtime on a Saturday. The game you were meant to be playing in was called off, you were staying with relatives and the prospect of an afternoon with Auntie Doris was less than appealing. My father needing to entertain me and fancying getting out himself. Whatever.
What would then happen is one would scan the paper to see who was at home, and set off to the Medder or random nearby ground if away from Shrewsbury with £5.00 in pocket to purchase admission, programme and Bovril. This was the case even if you were going to a big 'Division One' game at somewhere like Old Trafford or St James Park.
I did this myself in my late teens/early twenties in the 1990s. However, admission prices and availablity had pushed 'Premier' and even 'Division One' football out of reach. Still, I could still watch lower league stuff and get change for a tenner.
I hardly go at all now - £15 plus train fare or petrol money is too much, yet I must have been to maybe 100 games in my life where I went along at short notice just because I and/or my father fancied an afternoon's entertainment.
Is my like gone forever? How sad.

I have been known to pop to a game at short notice, but more often than not things are planned in advance. I use public transport so I need to check train times / bus times methodically before deciding whether it's feasible to get anywhere.

I've always been an "all or nothing" fan
Except for going with my dad when I was young, I started to go very regularly in the late 70's/early 80's, all home, most away matches
Had a 20 year break due to raising family, 11 years in the TA, working away etc.
Now I go whenever I can again. but its different now, I have to plan my matches, as I have a long journey to make
