I've just been offered a job in shrewsbury and if it goes well i will probably move there, is it good place for twentysomethings to live?
I have been many times to the meadow but don't know much else about the place, looks like a nice place, where is the trendy area to live?
(I know i sound about fourty using words like trendy but i think its 'cool'!!!)
I am hoping that the night life is v.good and there are lots of good looking chicks.
anybody care to comment?

Shrewsbury is a lovely place to live.
It's a beautiful town with lots of good pubs and restaurants.
It's only 1 hr (if you're lucky!) away from Birmingham on the train as well

I'd agree with Phil, especially when compared to Market Drayton, Telford etc...
It'd be nice however if it regained its direct train route to London

My brother lives in Copthorne and thnks Shrewsbury is great,i cant disagree about that there is everything in the Town you would need for a descent life and maybe to lay down a few roots,if you are prepared to look long enough.Shrewsbury in summer and Autumn is a complete delight that the local people dont really appreciate, the only thing wrong with the Town is the price of housing ,if you want to live near the town or in it. the Pride of Shropshire.

However, more realistically add an hour onto that time

As a bit of a backwater it is somewhat lacking in the 'vibrancy and 'diversity' of metroplitain areas It's small town England, still (for the moment) a very pleasant place to live. Low crime, good schools, peacefula and all the other nudge nudge euphanisms. Only trouble seems to be fights in town on a Friday/Saturday night (every time I return to Salop I seem to see one).

I'm definitely looking to move to Shrewsbury (as a suffering Telford resident) sometime in the future now that I've got my car and I can commute to Telford for work if needs be Where are the best flats in Shrewsbury tho? And affordable too come to that (I only earn £13k a year), theres always loads of flats to let at Coton Manor but it doesnt look too appealing

Dont be too dismissive of any area as what you need to do is get on the first rung of the ladder. You need to try and move up the property ladder as you get older. I have been very lucky in this aspect selling one house for a hyper-inflated price while finding a really nice house in a rundown condition to do up. Having said that it takes all my spare time and money but when you consider its value has gone up threefold in four years you can appriciate it is money well spent.

Shrewsbury has in its favour
1) clean and safe
2) the bad areas are still nice and the bad schools are still good
3) lots of thing to do, people to see and places to go
You are close to Birmingham and Manchester if you want the lights of the big city, but also 20 minutes from the top of the Long Mynd
Quiet country pubs to die for and mid / north wales mountains and beaches within 2 hours
Be prepared to take a day trip every so often and you will be very very happy
For its size it has a lot going for it, and of course there is less travelling for town games and also lots of footie to be played
House prices have increased massively to reflect all these positives, but it is still affordable compared to huge swathes of the country, and the telford job market is still buoyant with more jobs than there are people

I didn't live in Shrewsbury, I lived in Market Drayton. I always liked Shrewsbury, though. It seems to me it's got the best of everything. All the ameneties of a town, good shops. I like the mixture of old and new. All the "big name" shops in The Darwin Centre and Pride Hill shopping Centre; yet you can wander off into Mediaeval streets. I often wonder why I left Shropshire and went to Liverpool- and ended up in the Wigan area. I suppose it was a "rite of passage"! Liverpool was where it was all happening in the 60's. Then I got married to a Welsh/Scouser from Birkenhead! It's strange, really because, these days, I spend more time at weekends in Shrewsbury than I do in any of the towns around here! Yes- if Mr Wiggy was willing to move- I'd move back to Shropshire tomorrow! The fact that, by a strange quirk of fate, my eldest daughter, my son-in-law and three grandchildren all live in Shropshire, as well as my cousin and my only surviving Auntie, means that there's even more reason to want to move "back home". It's a great place. I love it.

There are decent properties up for rent in town, I pay £325 inc gas and private parking in coton hill which isn't to bad really, but I have not got a hope in hell to buy a house around here.
I think 1 bedroom flats are fetching anywhere between £80,000- £100,000 in most parts of town but there might be a flood of property coming on to the market within the next 3-4 years as loads of land including the maltings will be apartment based.

shrewsbury is the centre of the universe in my mind. ;D however, as a young person, it's quite a small place sometimes insular. i'm moving to cairo soon which is a bit bigger! and in a few years i'd like to be back in salop.

Shrewsbury is a beautiful Town. I think you've got to live away from it as a youngster just to realise how good it is.

Shrewsbury is a beautiful Town. I think you've got to live away from it as a youngster just to realise how good it is. I totally agree. At one point I couldn't wait to get away and I moved to London for 7 years. I returned a year ago and it's amazing how much more you appreciated the place. The quality of life is far better than most places.
