Stoke city have a statue of stanley matthews outside their ground. Who thinks it would be a good idea to get a statue of the great Rowley outside the New Meadow?

maybe inside would be a better idea, just in front of our midfield.
Good idea though, Im sure if donations towards it were asked for, there'd be a lot of take up.

OK, I'm going to be a bit controversial here.....
All this Arthur Rowley Appreciation Society stuff is fine, to a certain extent. Yes it was agreat achievement scoring his 460 odd goals, yes we should honour him in some way for being part of STFC's history as both player and manager.
But...I think the Stanley Matthews comparison is a bit OTT. At the end of the day Arthur scored 290 (ish) of those goals at Leicester, he didn't achieve as much success as Turner as a manager, and at heart he was always a Wolves fan.

i must agree with vodkavic. rowley was of course a thoroughly unique and talented footballer and a very nice bloke, and i think we should never forget him.
however, unfortunately stfc don't have a legend in the best/matthews sense, so it seems a bit silly to try and construct one out of a guy who scored a lot of goals for another team than us.
please god no 'Rowley Park' nonsense either - shrewsbury play at the meadow, and the new ground should be called something meadow, surely? who else plays at a meadow? now THAT is unique, unlike our claim to arthur rowley.

I agree with Vodkavic, but I would say is that we should name the turning and road to the stadium itself (not Oteley Road) into the new ground "Rowley way" so we can sing "Going down the Rowley Way to see the Shrewsbury Aces"
Now that will catch on ;D

There is something else to consider, we need want to appeal to the younger generation, to get thier support before the usual prem clubs, the ground name if its not a sponsers name, would need to appeal to them, kids are interested in 'now' not history. A Rowley stand with a big plaque with his scoring history with a picture of him scoring a goal scribed into the marble? at least that would educate future supporters about some of the clubs past.

there are always different interpretations of history and who was important and when the fact is Rowley is the only name associated with STFC that has a big claim in the world of football, the highest scorer in the football league even if he had only played a month on loan for us we should commemorate that histroic event the fact he played, scored and managed us is something we need to keep hold of, respect, and also commercialise effectively with memorabilia and events etc we have been woeful at using our past to raise future money, but we are steeped in 50 years of league football and in an area where the population don;t move away as much we have many people who really have been following the town for 50+ years, like Jamo

Just going back to the start of the thread, Stan Matthews best years were at Blackpool even tho' Stoke have a statue. It was with us that Arthur got the record and with us that he added 50+ goals to it.
got to be Rowley's Meadow to go with the Rowley's Mansion the town already has

even if he had only played a month on loan for us we should commemorate that histroic event Should we also have a Gerry Daly statue then to commemorate the most capped international ever to play for Town? (Somebody will probably tell me he wasn't but you get the point!!)

I'm a proponent of including some past history as we move to a new stadium. Whether it's " ?? Stadium at Rowley Park" or Rowley Way that leads to the stadium, or some other naming, I think the past needs to be linked to the future. I'm not convinced we need a statue though.

Lets also not forgt that Arthur Rowley was a regular down the Meadow.
Infact his last game was an entertaining 0-0 against Bournmouth, he passed away a few days later.
He may have been a wolves fans,
but as Dave said
He scored a record amount of goals for STFC, broke the goal scoring record whilst with STFC, Scored a record amount of goals in a season for STFC, Played for us, Managed us, Had two testimonials, and continued to watch Salop untill the very end.
I'd say he was as much a supporter of the club, as Jamo is, I am, and all other STFC fans.
Legend,
After all how many other clubs have such a strong link with such a momentus footballer?

Stanley Matthews didn't spend his entire career with Stoke, he also spent some time with Blackpool- www.footballculture.net/history/history_matthews.htmlThe fact is, Arthur Rowley's goal- scoring record is never likely to be beaten. (The previous record-holder was Jimmy McGrory, apparently.) I tend to think that Arthur Rowley "belongs" to Shrewsbury Town. F.C. He made Shrewsbury his home, didn't he? He retired and died in Shrewsbury? The fact that Town can share in his claim to fame is important, because it has an impact on the importance of our Football Club. In these days when small lower division Football Clubs like ours are struggling beacuse the greedy Premiership giants are starving them, it is good to hold on to some significant claim to fame. Arthur Rowley IS a part of our heritage- let's celebrate the fact.
