He said he'd have liked to have gone to University- but thought he couldn't do it now (after finishing playing Football, I suppose) because it's sad when you're 37 going to fresher's week!! Sammy!!- Have I got news for you!! I didn't get a first degree, 'coz didn't need one for teaching when I started off- so I went to Crewe (Now part of Manchester Metropolitan Uni) and got a Cert Ed. (3 year course) I always wanted a degree, but felt I couldn't do it, work full time and bring up my children. So- I went on a University course (University of Sheffield) at 50!!! NOT 37- I was 50!!!!! It was distance learning but some residential weekends- and we all got right back into student mode, I can tell you!!! Got an M.Ed, too. Then I a course in Reading Recovery run by the University of London. I wanted to specialise in helping children with specific learning difficulties. & years later, I got a Post Graduate Certificate (P.G. Cert SpLD) and approved teacher status from the British Dyslexia Association. If it's not too late at 50, then it's certainly not too late at 37!!!! In ten years, we could see Sammy propping up some student bar drinking his "bee-ahs" and worrying about getting his dissertation finished on time!!!
