following from the scary trips thread....
there have been one or two unpleasant days (off the pitch) recently down the meadow, swansea and luton among them, but for me nothing compares to the absolute bedlam of Cardiff or Middlesborough in the 80s.
Cardiff fans overturning cars on the Kop, Boro fans setting fire to the buffet in the Station end - first time Shropshire police issued with riot gear....etc
Chelsea Leeds etc were always quite lively too - seats regularly ripped out of the stands (amazing how the game always used to carry on but the ball never went anywhere near the bottom (station) corner!!).
Anyone remember Chelsea fans invading the Riverside in 81 (ish)??
Even though I was caught right in the middle of that Chelsea 'invasion' the most concerned I've ever been at the Meadow was Middlesborough (84/5?) - 2000 or so of them with absolutley no intention of coming to watch the game. Scary stuff.

Swap Derby for Middlesbrough aswell.
Northampton on last day of 92/93 was a bit hairy. Nags windows went through and knives flashed around. Then kicked off by the station.
Gawd bless em

Chelsea 79 in the riverside was fun Leeds ripping up seats in their 5-1 defeat here. Middlesborough did the meadow two years on the trot

Things have improved as hooligans now seem to conduct there 'meetings' away from the grounds, recent events that stand out: Wolves (H) friendly in 2001. Small and over quickly but still pretty nasty especially for a friendly. Stafford Rangers brought a few trouble makers when we played them and kicked off big style at the station. Chelsea in 2003 were fairly unpleasnt-shared a train ride back to Ludlow with one or two wannabe headhunters from that well know bastion of Chelsea supporters...LEOMINSTER! Quite an uncomfortable ride home

I suppose it depends on where you end up after a game as to what level of trouble you may encounter. I used to regularly catch a train or a taxi from opposite the station and it it got a bit ugly after the Wrexham and Chelsea games in 02/03. The friendly with Wolves was probably the worst because as one of the Wolves 'fans' was walking past the Riverside he spat on a woman in front of me. I called him a and he lept into the stand. He didn't bother with me though and it was all over in 30 seconds.

for someone who has been at the front line of a civil war in croatia in 1991 - being at the Gay Meadow was far more scarey when we relegated Derby !
I can handle missiles and cluster bombs but spinning flying plastic seats twice nearly my head off
Middlesborough - the first time riot police attended a football league game - for the younger readers - the old buffet shutters were made of wood - boro fans the away buffet apart and battled with police using the wood from the shutters whilst others looted the buffer throwing out free mars bars and pies - good job redmile wasnt playing for us then or otherwise he'd of offered to go in goal and would have been catching the free food instead :-)
chelsea - was that 79 or 81..? god im getting old - the time when they emptied the railway track of stones - a shower of rocks on town fans leaving the meadow with everyone running for cover
cardiff was bad when they smashed literally every window up Wyle Cop and over turned a car -
...those were the days when the shropshire star didnt have to blow nothing in to something
Mboro was the worst I think for actual violence, but for Town fans being in the middle of it.. Id probably say Derby inside the Meadow and Chelsea outside !

chelsea 79 it was amazing to see the riverside open up and just chelsea fans in the middle then like a bomb had gone off as it went crazy. Birmingham the year they went up carnt remember exactly, they were all on the station end roof and sat all round the pich, only time iv felt out numberd at home.

Amazing recollections really. I too can remember all of these and more. Amazing how vivid the memories. But are we being a bit hypercritical?? Some of us who were involved in those days, intentionally or not, are very quick to put down any trouble makers today yet I am sure some of you businessmen, solicitors and bank managers were no angels.

Thats very ture, I can't recall any major problems when I have been to see a game at the Meadow...no doubt because I head right for the Abbey Foregate car park and not over the bridge into town... Does anyone know how many Shrewsbury 'fans' (approx) are banned from attending games at the Meadow? I would have though thats helped calm things down a bit in recent years?

Remember walking out of the Man City cup game ( ?77-78)only a kid with me mum, and seeing a wall of city fans coming towards us town fans as we came out of the gates. Also got pinned up against a wall by a gang of west ham fans ( ?80-81) outside the old gun shop in college hill following a bit of a chase. They nicked my scarf and burnt it in the station end during the game Dont think we have hooligans like we used to, does anyone remember lads like japo ( rip ) and Brian "chuck" Norris. These lads where nutters and would fight anyone . Im not sure we have lads like that anymore. ( thankfully) Norris goes in the wakeman stand now rrom time to time with his son.

Villa game early 70s with no segregation. Only time I left early to miss the trouble - pity was I also missed our winner!

My first ever game was the Villa match in 71.Can't remember anything about the game but still have vivid memories of a couple of skinheads planting some claret and blue balloons in the centre circle at half time and the station end surrounded by police with dogs. I thought this was all really exciting at the time! Cardiff 75-6, beat them 3-1 and they kicked off big style. Remember my dad dragging me and my sister into Abbey Hardware as they smashed windows in the Abbey and attacked a Midland Red bus. Same location against Man City three years later a load of angry Mancs causing havoc under the railway bridge by the chippie, a few kicks that day as I desperately tried to hide the plethora of Town memorabilia about my person.
