If Hoddle had not badly managed Owen and Beckham we would have done better, that is my basic belief
Losing to Romania was needless and put us up against Argentina. I am pretty sure Beckham would have been calmer and more responsible had he had the backing of his manager and not such a furore about his place and a sense of injustice at being left out
If the 2004 side was better than 98 then what an absolute shambles it was that we didn't do anything without Rooney

I'm not entirely sure you can place the blame for Beckham's kick at Ortega (I think?), which is a split second reaction, on the selection policy of Glenn Hoddle!

I don't remember any poor management of Owen and Beckham Sure he didn't start with Owen for the tournament, but that's hardly mis management, and given that Owen was a raw 17/18 year old with a handful of games and the Shearer Sheringham partnership had been succesful for several years, its hardly a surprise. And as for Beckham, well its debatable that. If anything people claim there was poor management of Beckham after argentina but not before. Beckham certainly hadn't established himself as a definate england starter in 1998, that came later. In fact, Hoddle was the manager who gave Beckham and Owen their first caps.

do you not remember "Owen is not a natural goalscorer"?
Beckham had played about 125 games for United and was widely recognised as the best young player in the country by eveyrone except hoddle, had played champions league football and won the title with United. Less than a year afterwards that team won the European Cup
You cannot account for moments of irrational behaviour but I do think Beckham would have acte ddifferently if he had not been given sucha raw deal by his own manager
Hoddle did not have faith in him, despite calls from just about everyone to play him
Owen had played 44 games for Liverpool in the league and Uefa cup scoring 25 goals in that season
That is far far far far far better than any record Rooney can muster, but Hoddle did not have faith in him

I do remember the quote. but that's hardly a lack of faith. If he hadn't have had faith in Owen, he wouldn't have picked him. Sheringham and Shearer was an established partnership, if he'd have broken it up and it failed he'd have been dammed for that too.

The heart of the team was
Seaman
Adams and Campbell
Scholes and Ince
Shearer and Sheringham (Owen)
that is not a bad basis

I'll go by the ever reliable and loath to slate someone Gareth Southgate.
He said whilst Hoddle was a great coach he was a s**te man manager. Read Woody and Nord and skip to the chapters about world cup 98...
Southgate turned his ankle during the tournament and missed most of it.
He wasn't caught out by a tabloid, but by a broadsheet. He'd already p**sed a lot of people off with his world cup diary.
At Southampton yeah he did a decent job, but left it unfinished, like he did at chelsea, and he was sacked from the england and spurs job before he could do a decent job.
As for him the manager, well there are lots of players who have played under him who will happily que up and shoot him down as a person and manager....

So apart from Tren and Ant,everybody, and that includes most of the Wolves fans on Talksport today and my season ticket holding Wolves boss think Hoddle is Crass.
He is going to get a very interesting reception at Moulineux tonight.
