I've recently had a letter from our friends at the Inland Revenue explaining how there was a shortfall of £360 in my NI contributions for the 02/03 tax year. I was in full time University education that year - Can any really clever person tell me whether I am liable for this bill? I rang the telephone number provided and got fobbed off with a load of old rubbish

Were you working during that period Craig? Students are still charged NI even if exempt from income tax - although if you were working your employer should have paid this appropiately out of your wages.

Craig,
You got this letter because you paid some National Insurance contributions during the year. You have not paid enough for it to be a qualifying year towards benefits or your pension.
The letter is OFFERING you the chance to pay to make it a qualifying year. You do not have to pay the money if you don't want to.
It depends on how old you are and when you are planning to retire as to whether it is worth your while paying.
Send me a pm if you want further details.

I didn't work at all during the year which is why I am a little confused about getting this letter. I'll take you up on your kind offer later on this evening Martin, cheers!

I paid NI for the job I did in my summer holiday that year (working with the Riverside's potatoes ;D). The payment is optional and as previously stated, it says it will go towards a pension. There is no chance in hell I'm paying them that money especially as the IR owe me £900

yes - i recently had the same one. i was also a student during the time. I also had another recently saying I had to go for an interview at job centre as they have found me a NI number!! I had not even lost mine and the only letter I wrote was telling them of a change of name thriugh marrriage earlier this year. I phoned them up and the lady said on the computer I was still Miss Hopkins, even though the letter was addresses to Mrs Nixon. How crazy is that?? So I have to write another letter to tell them I am Mrs Nixon. It\'s mad

The advice given above can't be faulted and payment is optional.
Bearing in mind you only need a certain number of "qualifying" years out of a full working life period to gain a full pension then you can afford to miss a few years .
Even if you decide that payment is a good investment for a higher pension at retirement the IR will usually give you a period of grace to fund payment , sometimes 5years or more. If thats the case take the payment holiday as the £300 or so can be making you more money meanwhile
