Under 20’s 4 – Vets 2
On a cloudy but warm morning it was good to see the game attended by so many with people attending from as far away as the united states, whilst others struggled to focus there attention on something else other than the 12.35 at Lingfield. Pre match squad photos taken it was time for the teams to take to battle with first blood to Harmerhill in the winning of the vital coin toss, a pointless switch of end ensued.
Starting for the Under 20’s were – Craig (MyddleShrew) (GK) Afro, Cormack(DRAS founder), Groover and Giles(trueshrew) at the back. In Midfield Mike Price (BringbackAuzzie), Ant, Downsey, Nick (BlueShrew) and up front the deadly Mystic Murray James and Peter Jones
For the Vets it was Alan James in goal (Jamo), At the back Wrighty, Chris Allan (Carter), Shrews Ade, and Paul Williams (Chaz). In Midfield Andy (Harmerhill) Stu Dunn, Nick Jonesey and Kev Speakey, and upfront Pete downward (PeteD) and Digger Dave. With the vets operating a roll on roll off substitution policy. At most points in the game god only knows where they were playing the all swapped so much!!!
In a measured opening by both teams it was first bloody to the Under 20’s with the impressive Downsy notching his first of the game. As the ball broke lose in the midfield it was snapped up by Nick and fed to Ant who with the help of Murray worked it inside to Downsy, who proceeded to use his quick feet, to nip past Wrighty and fire near post at Jamo, who could have done better with the shot. It was no wonder that Downsey was only 2/1 with the bookies. The under 20’s were ahead but certainly were not dominating. It was the Vets who were getting all the refs desions from hand balls, throw ins and Freekicks. One such decision that almost worded in the favour was when the impressive MyddleShrew who was outstanding in goal on debut committed a rare mistake, picking a back pass up in the box. But Pete Downward who crossed weakly wasted the indirect kick.
As the game wound up to half time tempers and voices were raised with a number of the Under 20’s players getting aggrieved at the ref, with Murray and Ant being of particular mouthyness, but it might have helped if in stead of focusing on giving the ref a hard time they concentrated on helping the defence who were finally breached in the 2nd minute before half time after scr@ppy play In the box led to Digger Dave Poking home from 2 yards. The vets were buoyed and controled the game out till half time. The ref had a mars bar at half time kindly supplied by a couple of the fans there (cheers for that!!) and the team talks began. The Under 20’s were spouting “bad luck”, “ref not giving us anything” and “we did not deserve that”, And the vets were saying “back in it”, “the refs done a great job” (Dunny) and “we got them on the ropes now”.
Man of the half – Stu Dunn for a controlled first half in the Vets midfield – 1-1 Half time.
As the second half began it was a measured start again from both teams with the game so delicately balanced, but as the half progressed the tempers started to flare up again, Murray’s continual moaning about his treatment (which was nothing exceptional) was annoying to say the least and when ever he went in hard for a tackle it was inevitably much worse than anything he received, fans on the sidelines made the obvious Killinsmann and Pires comparisons. Digger Dave was involved with 2 incidents where a steady Giles tackled him fairly which Dave was angered by then 2 minutes later, a hot headed Afro went through Dave Knee high and hacked him down, things were looking to boil over but a bit of shouting at people and threats to shut the F**k up by the ref seemed to clam things down.
To go 2-1 up the Vets produced a moment of magic from the boot of Ian Whitfield. The boy Whitflield who had been subbed on early in the first half for Harmerhill Shrew found him self in space at long range and unleashed a unstoppable drive into the net. The goal of the day and one that looked to have put the vets in a commanding position for the rest of the second half. The under 20’s continued to push with Mike Price having one of his better games ever and Groover looking solid in the unusual centre back position, the youths created a number of chances which were wastefully spurned by a out of sorts Muzza. Hopkins who has replaced Peter Jones also had a chance, which was not taken from a corner. It was Muzza how ever who came closest to getting the youth back level when a trademark rasping drive hit the post.
At the other end the vets were also missing there chances to end the game with Digger Daves reluctance to shoot sometimes hindering the forward play, and Peted missing a good chance when he powered passed Cormack for the first time in the game.
The vets were given a massive let off with 25 mins to go when neat play on the edge of the area by Murray and Welshshrew allowed then to bust through into the box and get a one on one with the keeper, Jamo going for the ball wiped out the forwards and a blatant penalty was awarded much a to Jamos frustration. As Ant walked towards the ball for the Pen, Linesman Ian Whitfield was seen to be flagging that an unfortunate Murray was off side earlier in the move and the Ref made the brave decision (like had been the case all morning) to stick with the linesman’s guidance. This blow to the Under 20’s was taken well with a fired up Iain Cormack telling the team to keep going because they were playing some nice football as the vets tired, he was proved to be correct.
With 14 Minutes remaining the vets still appeared to be in full control, with the game slowly petering out but a powerful run from Ant Thomas was about to change the game. Bursting through off a Downsey through ball Thomas and Wrighty clashed on the edge of the box with Wighty coming off the worst in a 50/50 challenge, Thomas then proceeded to move in goal and fire past a stationary James in goal. James complained to the ref but forgot that like most footballers you play to the whistle and there was not one with Lino Andy Harmerhillshrew who also on had look at the decision also not giving the vets a free kicks. This incensed a number of the Vets team, who took it to be blatant cheating, forgetting the fact that they had had the stone wall pen that was given against them rescinded at the whim of there own linesman!!!! It might been the fact that sometimes old legs just gave up but the next 5 minutes saw things go from bad to worse for the Vets.
As head dropped Downsey, Thomas and Welshshrew took control of the game and with Giles playing some delightful football from the back the game opened up. As the vets defence make it open season Downsy cashed in for his second after a mesmerizing run from near the half way line and then ant got his second after a excellent long 40 yard through ball from the impressive Giles Rigby.
As the whistle blew for full time the players shook hands, congratulations were shared and rematches booked.
Man of the Match – Downsy for the little bit of class he had above the rest, tidy with the ball, cool finish at an important time and general excellent play. But that said I though all played well and gave a good account of themselves in a strongly contested game. Im not saying anything about my reffing on a personally level cos you have all done that enough this weekend!!!!
Final Score Vets 2 – Under 20’s 4
