Made a very rare mistake today and gifted Chester a goal. Quinny got a lot of things wrong but fair play to him for offloading Ian ;D

Soon as I heard the words "a mistake by Halifax keeper Ian Dunbavin" I did think of you straight away Pilch

I wonder what a keeper he might have been under a decent manager - I bet GP would have made something of him. The lad was always a good shot stopper, just needed his head straightening out.

His kicking was awful, and his pathetic attempts to claim crosses was embarrasing. How could someone get so far in their profession without being able to claim simple crosses?

As has been said the only thing going for him was a good stopper - his kicking was poor, he was poor on crosses and was undecisive, wait a minute doesn't that sound like Howie I think the only reason he was kept on was to get Gerrard down the Meadow and for us to have a celebrity fan ;D

you have to remember who was in goal for the great escape game though..
not a great keeper, but reasonably competent.

You also have to remember some of his performances in the season we went down. Away at Cambridge was as bad as I have ever seen any keeper play at any level ever.

Yes he did play in the great escape, along the greats (?) of Gayle, Jobling, Herbert, Wilding, Hanmer and the like...

Give credit where it's due, Bavo had a good game at Exeter, especially laudable when he was so young and inexperienced.
The pity is that he did not build on it.

don't make the great escape sound like a triumph it wasn't we almost went down
and due to bavo 2 years later we did
i remember posting a message on the old rivals board in the december of the season we went down slating bavo and i got crucified for it
i know the defense wasn't up to much but as the season got longer bavo was a clown on and off the pitch
i heard he turned up for training still drunk from the night before more than once
i would have given anything to be a professional footballer and even now if i knew 4000 fans were turning up next sunday morning to watch us (the bull in the barne) play i'd be drinking coke on saturday night ;D
or even if i knew 2 were coming ;D

Still think a manager like GP would have kept him and turned him around. He was a natural athlete but lacked focus.

I seem to remember Bavo almost condeming us to relegation that season when he decided to he was going to kick the ball at Treton from point blank range and watch the frigging thing dribble into our net...
