Pedigree, every time. Better than any lager.

Both beers, when on song, take a load of beating. However, I go for pedigree, as it tends to be more consistent! My worst ever int of Pedi was in the OPO in about 1989, because I was young (then!), the barman would not entertain my complaint of it being sour and said I knew nothing about beer!

Niether, but Bass at a push as Marston's is the infamous 'eggy' beer

I love Pedigree, always a good pint. Seems to be one of those beers tho' that you don't need to many of to be left with a head as a reminder in the morning that you were indeed enjoying yourself the night before.
Also agree with SNFC about Ruddles, another damned fine pint.
Courage Directors is another favourite of mine, unfortunately though, many places that serve it just don't keep it right. Maybe it is a bad traveller like Banks's. There is a place in Chesterfield near the footy ground that keeps a quality pint of Directors.

Tell you what that is NOT a session beer. Four or five of those and you know about it! Morland also used to do one called Beech Nut that was very nice, they used to have it in the Dolphin all the time. My favourite ever has to be Youngs Winter Warmer, a real strong dark bitter, almost a porter I suppose. Shropshire Lad is always a good one, as was one called Enville Ale (?) that I was drinking in the Shakespear in Coalport the other week...............

While both Bass & Pedigree are excellent beers I must confess that either are my favourite. Bass fills you up. I used to get real stonking headaches from Pedigree when I was on sessions at the Peacock & Dun Cow back in the late 80s. Hard to say which I really prefer. Although not strictly a bitter "Golden Thread" from the Salopian brewery is excellent as is their "Heaven's Sent". I always enjoy the Phoenix Arizona in the Coach & Horses. Bathams Best is a good pint. (Discovered in the SVR Bridgnorth Station buffet on the way to Kidderminster that year!) Wood's have the benefit of being a very loyal STFC sponsor.

At last, a thread close to my heart! Has to be Pedigree, a Cynic's choice tipple, especially since it reacts better to indifferent storage than Bass, which is always hit and miss. Banks' is a passable pint too, and Woods' stuff (Shropshire Lad etc.) is pretty good for a Brewery of that size. What a shame the Wem brewery went under before I started drinking W Mid's beer really has to be the best, think of some of the rubbish that is in the rest of the country... Boddington's, Theakstons, Ruddles, Flowers etc. no thanks! Honourable exceptions are Cains from Liverpool and Cameron's from Hartlepool, the latter owned by the same people who brew Marston's and Bank's. No coincidence that these are the last remaining medioum size regional breweries not owned by the big brewers. A night out these days with lads on 'Stella' and the like reveals a sad loss too our national heritage...

There are still a few of us 'young un's' trying to keep real beer alive...I have been brought up to know the difference my Holdens and Hobsons For me Deuschers Caladonian, Archers Golden and Shropshire Gold always hit the spot but others I look forward drinking Black Sheep, Hoggards and Heaven Sent.

I think the style of Real Ale you like tends to depend on where you are educated into drinking. Although I started drinking in the South East of England I used to go most Sundays to watch Western League games. This meant lots of drinking in Somerset and Devon, hence I tend to like the beers from that area. Cotleigh, Exmoor, Devenish before it's demise. I cannot think of a beer I like from a major brewer

I'll tell you what. Just having a quick gander through this post makes you realise how well blessed we are in this country with proper beer. It's refreshing (sic) to realise that there are still many people who have not succumbed to the advertising led trend towards drinking s**te lager. Personally i like Abbot's Ale and anything from the Timothy Taylor brewery. Last year at Halifax we found a pub called The Shear's Inn that had five different beers on from this fine company. Bloody paradise.

Abbott Ale seems to be a beer you either love or hate.
Never liked it myself, now give me anything from the Ridleys Brewery and I am in heaven.

Well, both brewed locally to me but hate Pedi. Tastes foul, so out of those two it'd have to be Bass.
Had a nice Courage Director's Bitter or four on Saturday night though, very good stuff. Proper flat ale.
Can't beat Burton Bridge Brewery real ale of course, but doubt you'd get that in Shrewsbury unless as a guest ale.

Bass, if its kept well is superb, but I would say that Pedigree is more consisitent and it doesn't smell like it used to which is an improvement.
Anyway don't get to drink either that often, too busy drinking Hobson best bitter in the Castle Hotel or (of course) XXX bitter at the Three Tuns in Bishops Castle, and of course we alos have the Six Bells brewery as well who's 'Nevs' is an excellent pint.

These days I am a Guiness man but used to prefer Bass over Pedigree and Theakstons Old Peculiar over anything else. Too many Real Ale Festivals pushed me towards the black stuff eventually

See the second episode of the second series of I'm Alan Partridge, the one with his new mate Dan who turns out to be a swinger. Ahh-haa.

If more than a handful of Shropshire landlords took pride in beer quality and dispense we could make realistic comparisons. Am surprised that Shropshire Lad has not had more mentions! I'd add Woodeforde's Wherry and Deuchars. I pine for the pre Brewery move Hanby's Drawell! Surprised that folk are still quoffing the post brewery move Bass which is a poor imitation of its predecessor.
