I have been rather narked by some of the less positive contributions on here about the talents of Ryan Lowe. He is a gifted footballer but his variability has always drawn frustration from the fans and the management, hence he was not a regular in the side. What about Sam? He is a crowd pleaser but he drifts in and out of games but because of the nature of his skill in taking on and beating defenders he gets the crowd excited and hopeful only to be too often disappointed. Again he is not always a regular pick for the side. So how do we compare these two. Marks out of 10? Passion for the game Sam 9 Ryan 7 Pure ability 8 8 Shooting 5 7 Goal scoring 3 6 Crossing 5 7 Running with the ball 9 6 Heading 2 3 Passing 5 6 Temperament 4 6 Total Sam 50 Ryan 56 So on my score Sam should be on his way with a lot of criticism to keep him company

There are two players I look for in our line-up: Luke Rodgers and Sam Aiston. People who can take the game to the opposition. From the last half a dozen games at the end of 2002-2003 Sam hasn't looked back, that despite his chronic knee problem.
Given the dirth of football played in the last two years Sam Aiston has been like a diamond up a sweep's ass.
People are going to start talking about end product. I'm talking about entertainment. A bollocking run down the left wing rides one tackle, gets the ball stuck under his feet and beats another player and himself, goes back for the ball, holds a player off, turns and accelerates away. A sliding tackle takes the ball of his toe, the defender comes up with the ball in the corner. Sam dives in gets the ball back. Scuffs it out at the near post for a goal kick. Great stuff.
If only people would make the near post run for him.

Apart from Ryan's crossing score being a little high, and Sam's heading score perhaps being a bit harsh, your scores aren't far off - that said, you can try & prove anything with stats Sam is a far more exciting player, is quicker, tracks back better, isn't afraid to put a challenge in (as we know), and more importantly he creates space for others as most teams usually try & double up on marking him. Sam can be a bit of a luxury at times when his crosses & passes keep going astray, but GP has made the right decision - I think Ryan was more of a luxury.

Sam is the best player at the club, we are very privaliged to see a player like him playing for Shrewsbury Town.

Get rid of Sam. Are you lot losing it?
He is the most entertaining player we have, runs at the opposition, opens up defences.
Always gives his all and tries his best. No comparison with Ryan whose inconsistency was rediculous and ability to tackle was non existent.

You could equally add plenty of other relevant categories like pace, strength and tackling, all of which would see Sam come out on top by a mile.
As I said in the other thread, the difference between the team with and without Sam is illustrated perfectly by games such as home vs Bury and away at Mansfield, where he made an immense impact for the better.

is there really any need to have a scapegoat target lol aiston has his ups and downs, strengths and weaknesses like all other players lol to compare him to lowe-well theres no point, because they are both good footballers, now playing at seperate clubs and sams not going anywhere (yet) and i am more than pleased when he is in the team, and when hes not i think we lack that extra pace that he has got, and that bit of fight that hes got.

i've got nowt against sam and his ability to run down the line and take players on but....
but my opinion a return of about 1 goal per season and about half a dozen assists is pathetic

Simple comparison to my mind, and not just because Pilch is bigger than me ................. The pair of em have always been vastly overated by a very large number of fans. Aiston improved of late must admit but please Gary DONT PLAY HIM ON THE FRIGGING RIGHT ANYMORE EVEN FOR 10 MINUTES.............

Have to say there are few players in our league who have the ability to dribble at pace and take a game directly to the opposition. As such we are very privledged to have Sam. As for this end product bollex, well if he could cross in any shape or form, he'd never have come to Salop, and he certanly wouldnt be playing here now I totally agree with Seans comments about entertainment.

I do wish Sam would produce more of an "productive end" to his runs sometimes, but I certainly dont want to see him leave.
